Considered among the nation’s premier public courses, Lely Resort's par 72, 7,095-yard Flamingo Island course was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr.—one of the game’s great masters. Many of Flamingo Island’s holes feature white sand bunkers outlining perfectly-sculpted hourglass fairways and large, undulating Bermuda grass greens.

Business Insider reveals that over 800 golf courses have closed within the last decade. Golf-industry researcher Pellucid shows that the number of regular golfers has fallen from 30 million to 20.9 million between 2002 and 2016.
Many of these areas are zoned as commercial to accommodate clubhouses, restaurants, and bars that often accompany golf courses. Because these zoning restrictions can be hard to change, many instead work within the current limitations and build shopping centers, office space, or industrial parks instead.
According to golf course architect William Amick, the average course requires 140 to 180 acres of land. When those courses close, the land becomes available for a number of new projects.
The golf course, once abundant across American suburbs, represented status and exclusivity for those who could afford to play the game. Even in areas with more modest income, golf was often seen as a way for the business elite to mix and mingle.
Plus, golf courses are normally in wealthier areas, which means these new homes will include access to quality schools and workplaces. But many who already live in those neighborhoods aren’t keen on the idea of building more homes or apartments. They would rather see the land become into parks or reservation areas.
Founded in 1926 , Mahoning Valley was a private club for the first 80 years, only recently opening to the public. Located in Lehighton, off of the PA turnpike’s Northeast Extension, it was about a 90-minute drive from Center City, at the base of the Poconos. The course did not re-open for the 2019 golf season. A report from October about a clubhouse fire on the property indicated the course had recently been sold and renovations were being made, so perhaps it will re-open. A 6,670-yard par-73 course, the front-9 was built by Maurice McCarthy (Hershey CC) with the Gordons expanding the course to 18-holes in the 50s. Click here for a photo tour of the course.
In 2020, Mercer County agreed to purchase the club and the plan is to re-open in Spring of 2021. The County operates four other courses – Mountain View, Princeton CC, and Mercer Oaks East and West. Hopewell Valley was designed by Thomas Winton in 1927 and operated as a private club for most of its existence, opening to the public in 2016. The course is a par-72, with yardage of 6,621 from the back and 6,281 from the middle tees. For a photo tour of the course, click here.
The Vellano Golf Course in Chino Hills was shut down without warning on May 10, less than 24 hours after members of the homeowners’ association informed their board they did not want residential development on the golf course.
Homeowner Ben Eramya said the golf course owners have a history of allowing golf courses to fall into disrepair to force homeowners into allowing homes. “They are depressing the area by closing the golf course and using bully tactics until homeowners’ associations are forced to give in,” he said. “They are messing around with the wrong community because we are united.”
Western Golf Properties project manager Rick Adams, in cart, attempts to answer questions from Michael Konrad, president of the Vellano Homeowners’ Association, while homeowners Ben Eramya and Shannon Liu look on.
Mr. Konrad began engaging him in conversation, stating that WGP had not responded to his numerous phone calls since the golf course was shut down. Mr. Adams said he could not comment and asked the group to continue the conversation off the property.
