According to The Athletic, NASCAR is rearranging its schedule in 2021 and moving the All-Star Race to Texas Motor Speedway. This move will allow the removal of one of the currently scheduled Cup Series races from the North Texas track, which has held two races since 2005.

But then appearances there were few and far between until 1986. Since then, the track has been host to a Cup Series race each year except for the 2020 abbreviated schedule.
The Austin road course famously has hosted Formula 1, IndyCar Series and MotoGP events, but this year, the track was added to the NASCAR schedule with a full weekend’s worth of competition lined up, culminating with the Cup Series’ EchoPark Texas Grand Prix on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. ET (FS1).

As of 2022, current NASCAR national-level road courses include Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Circuit of the Americas, Sonoma, Watkins Glen, the Charlotte Roval, Road America, Mid-Ohio and Mosport. Former road courses include Riverside, Topeka, Mexico City, and Montreal.

On September 18, 2017 an article on Jalopnik was posted confirming the closure of Texas World Speedway which was being used as a dumping ground for vehicles flooded out by Hurricane Harvey. The entire 600-acre facility was being leased to Copart Inc.
In 2019, the first homes went up on the former race grounds. Now, in 2020, the complex is currently in the process of being torn down. In late February, cranes moved into the old speedway, demolished the press box and everything else that stood in its way.
NASCAR is an oval racing series, even if oval racing can seem bland, it is what the series is built around. Road courses do bring some great excitement and variety, but adding more could ruin that. Road courses could go from a must watch event in a season, to just another race on the schedule.

The thought of COTA as a viable option for NASCAR gained even more traction during F1 week in 2019 when Hall of Fame driver Tony Stewart performed a demonstration drive on the road course. When Stewart finished, he raved about the track.
NASCAR had a couple options for which COTA course to compete on, and it ultimately opted to go with the 3.41-mile long course, versus the 2.2-mile shorter one. It’s a 20-turn, counterclockwise course that flows with the track’s hilly landscape.
