Compared to silkier hair African-American hair contains more lipids, or fats, but the lipids are less bonded which is why the hair loves oils so much. Along with that, the follicle size is much thicker and it has a flattened elliptical cross section causing it to be curlier than other hair types.
The texture can be coarse and thick (kinky), soft to wavy (curly), or dense coarse strands of what's called “Senegalese”, common among African Americans of West African origin. Black people have been known for having curly textured hair that turns into curls when wet.

Why do we get dry afro hair? Dry afro hair is usually a result of a lack of moisture. Our scalp produces natural oils for our hair, however, unlike straight hair which allows these oils to glide down each strand, the oils in afro hair find it harder to move down each shaft.

Afro-textured hair, or kinky hair, is the hair texture of populations in Africa. Each strand of this hair type grows in a tiny, angle-like helix shape. The overall effect is such that, contrasted with straight, wavy or curly hair, afro-textured hair appears denser.
When you have afro hair, the natural oil your scalp produces can easily get stuck. As the oils are stuck and not moving down your hair, the ends of your afro hair become weak, brittle and dry. Your scalp might be dry too depending on the density of your hair.
Black hair is literally different than all other hair. While other races can have straight, wavy, or curly strands, most black people have varying degrees of tightly curled strands.
