The race began with Mitchell, Indiana, native Chase Briscoe leading more laps than he had all season. Last year’s Xfinity race winner spent the day fighting for a win to keep his Playoff hopes alive. Briscoe’s race was eventful, running up front but later having a tire problem.
After a chaotic series of late race restarts, the outstanding drive from of Kyle Larson, who led 28 laps, nearly went for naught when he was shuffled back in the field. He was able rebounded to finish 3rd, behind Allmendinger and runner-up Ryan Blaney.

1:03 p.m.: Engines are fired at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the command coming from Verizon VP of Enterprise Sales Michael Ruhnke. Verizon is the title sponsor for today’s race.
Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron will start on the pole for today’s race on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile paved asphalt road course. Byron posted the fastest qualifying lap (1 minute 27.765 seconds). Chase Briscoe will also start in the front row followed by Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Daniel Suárez, Martin Truex Jr., Joey Logano, A.J.
But after the final restart, Briscoe spun through the grass and received a stop-and-go penalty. He said that he didn’t hear the call and instead got back on course behind Hamlin. Briscoe tapped Hamlin from behind racing for the lead, spinning the No. 11 car out.
Hamlin finished 23rd, relinquishing the Cup Series points lead to Larson (+22), who finished third. Ryan Blaney finished in second. And in first place was Allmendinger, who called the race “survival of the fittest.”
