In 1906 Dunn spent the summer in Lake Placid, NY and the following year he moved to the United States permanently where he joined his uncle at Van Cortlandt Park GC. In 1907 Dunn was appointed pro at Wykagyl GC in Rochelle, NY and in 1909 he laid out the Lake Placid Resort G.C. where he moved the following year.

Shinnecock Hills is believed to be the oldest incorporated golf club in the United States (1891), to have the oldest golf clubhouse in the U.S. (1892), and to have been the first American golf club to admit women members, which it did from the start. It is also the only golf course to host the U.S. Open in three different centuries.
Participating in the 1896 Open was black professional player John Shippen, believed by many historians to have been the first USA-born golf professional. In 1901 the ladies' course was incorporated into a lengthened and redesigned course by Charles B. Macdonald and Seth Raynor, retaining five of Dunn's original holes.
