Among the pine-covered hills southwest of Bend in a large clearing caused by fire is a unique course in a unique setting. Tetherow Golf Club is a David McLay Kidd designed, Scottish-style course that has immaculately maintained fescue fairways and greens.
Opened in 2008. The course and development was started by Arrowood Development (Dan Bauhofer and John Lietz) and was completed by one of the original partners, Spring Capital Group (through Golf Partners, LLC). The present owner purchased the development in 2009.
Note that tee times for non-members not staying at the lodge are limited. There are two types of sand and they play slightly differently. Putts favor going away from the Cascades.
When it was built, the green at the 3-par 17th hole was a lot smaller. Basically, the lowest tier of the green was fairway (bordered on three sides by sand).
The course holds junior clinics for members and non-members, including a 6-week junior golf clinic. The driving range is converted into a Par-3 Links course for kids. Used on-site materials for several buildings. Living Roofs on several structures. Uses composted waste products in course mainteinance.
An immaculately maintained, stunningly designed, Scottish-style course in Central Oregon with amazing views of the Cascades. Those should be reasons enough.
