A tarn (or corrie loch) is a proglacial mountain lake, pond or pool, formed in a cirque excavated by a glacier. A moraine may form a natural dam below a tarn.

Other objects like the watch, buttons, a school ring, eventually found the person to be identified- Samuel Ira Felder, who accidentally drowned there in on a midnight canoe ride in 1921.
But in 2008, the lake used in the 1987 movie — known as Mountain Lake and located at Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, Virginia — completely dried up, leaving behind rotting fish and perplexed scientists, the Roanoke Times reported.
In 2020, the water level began to rise up again. By July, Mountain Lake was 1/3 full again, but the geologists using new Light Detection and Ranging data (LiDAR) data finally understood why the lake was not refilling fast.
