Non-physician health and human services providers require ongoing training to provide effective prevention, screening, care and support services for HIV, sexually transmitted infection (STI) and viral hepatitis. HIV Education and Training Programs, within the AIDS Institute's Office of the Medical Director, implements three distinct training initiatives to meet these needs. Overall, these initiatives offer more than 350 training events annually in more than 100 different training courses. These programs reach approximately 15,000 health and human services providers each year. Emphasis is placed on keeping pace with advances in science, policy, program development and emerging strategies to improve health outcomes. A growing number of trainings are available via webinar and other on-line formats. Select courses are approved for Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) credentialing towards the education and training requirements for renewal of CASAC/CPP/CPS certification.
The Center of Expertise in Hepatitis C and HIV/Hepatitis C Co-Infection offers a range of training interventions designed to prepare non-physician health and human services providers to deliver HCV prevention services, conduct outreach, conduct screening via rapid and conventional testing methods, facilitate support groups, link patients with chronic infection to health care; provide an array of support services and work with clients who have HIV/HCV co-infection. Trainings offered include topics such as: HCV screening and linkage to care; integrated HIV/STI/Hepatitis Screening; new developments in treatment; addressing substance use and mental health issues; working with young injectors; and a host of issues related to HIV/HCV co-infection.
