Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) training gives healthcare professionals the knowledge and skills they need to save lives in an emergency situation. Increasingly, ACLS certification is becoming a requirement for healthcare professionals who work in a critical care setting. But, what exactly is involved in the training?
Advanced cardiovascular life support (ACLS) certification offers a set of clinical algorithms for the treatment of life-threatening cardiovascular conditions. It was originally established in 1974 and has been updated regularly since that time, ensuring healthcare professionals possess the skills and knowledge to support patients during cardiac arrest, stroke and other emergencies.
What does this course teach?
The main difference between PALS and ACLS certifications is the ability to work on pediatric patients. Pediatric patients are delicate and even performing CPR on a little person is a completely different process than performing CPR on Adults.
Normally, anyone can apply for ACLS course materials to study and then take the certification exam. However, it is highly recommended that they be of medical backgrounds.
Who is required to have BLS, ACLS and PALS certifications? The Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required for all registered nurses. Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is required for RNs working in the ICU or with adults.
Only trained medical professionals can administer advanced cardiac life support to patients so nursing students must participate in advanced cardiac life support classes to gain the practice and hands-on experience that these courses have to offer.
Some of the topics you learn about in an ACLS training course include:Strokes.Care Systems.Team Dynamics.Acute dysrhythmia.Team Communication.Immediate Post-Cardiac Arrest.Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS)Recognition and Intervention of Cardiopulmonary Arrest.
ACLS the actual process is very stressful, and hard on people the first time. Mentally it is all an algorithm though, so it isn't like you have to think that critically, you just have to recognize the patterns.
Yes, there is a written test at the end of the ACLS class. It is 50 questions. You may use your book for reference, i.e. open book.
A: Students in ACLS courses are not required by the AHA to have a current BLS Provider card, but they are expected to be proficient in BLS skills. Training Centers may require students to have current BLS Provider card.
The main aim of ACLS is to allow nurses to administer care to adults that are facing cardiac and pulmonary arrests. This course not only equips the nurse with the skills to care for such patients, but it also allows them to diagnose such problems as well as other cardiopulmonary emergencies.
While BLS is often required for medical professionals, BLS / CPR courses are commonly completed by teachers, coaches, lifeguards, babysitters, and more. Conversely, ACLS is designed specifically for healthcare professionals. This includes physicians, nurses, anesthesiologists, paramedics, dentists, and more.
You will be notified immediately whether you pass or fail the exam. If you don't pass on your first attempt, you can retake the test as many times as needed until you earn a passing score. You will need to achieve a score of 80% or higher to pass the exam.

If you’re reading this, I assume you already know what ACLS training is and what purpose the ACLS certification serves. I’m going to cover it real quick anyway.
As more and more hospitals and institutions are requiring employees to have Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification, the demand for certification and renewal classes have grown immensely. Fortunately, many institutions are now allowing their employees to use an online provider to do this rather than an in-person classroom setting.
As previously discussed, no, a skills assessment is not required for a fully online ACLS course. You will find, however, that many courses will include the course material that would normally be covered in the skills assessment. The difference being – in an online program, the examination of this knowledge will be a cognitive assessment.
The short answer is no. The American Heart Association is the only provider of AHA ACLS certification cards and they do not currently endorse nor accredit (approve) any online program in which all aspects of the course are completed online.
Even if a program is not accredited, it does not mean it is not legit or that hospitals won’t accept that particular ACLS card. Keep in mind, there are no “aha approved” online ACLS courses. In fact, the American Heart Association does not approve or accredit other providers. In essence, they are their own provider.
As stated above, no wholly online ACLS course is accredited by the AHA, however, some may be nationally accredited by other agencies and institutions. Ask if the online ACLS provider has an agreement with the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine or the California Board of Registered Nursing.
ACLS involves recognizing cardiac rhythms on a monitor, which requires that one is a licensed, trained, health care professional, and involves utilizing an appropriate algorithm which can involve drugs that are only permitted to be administered by a licensed health care professional trained in their administration.
Even a licensed nurse working in a nursing home or even med-surg wouldn't typically take ACLS. Their role in a code would be to initiate BLS, call the code which would summon the MDs/RNs/RRTs/PharmD etc who have the knowledge to really run a code. (In a nursing home, sub "911" for "code.")
Jan 9, 2018. No you should not get ACLS certified, even if it is possible (I have no idea). ACLS procedures would not be allowed to be done by you; you couldn't push IV medications, read EKG strips on your own and recognize heart rhythms. 0 Likes.
For a layperson: BL S (basic life support), definitely yes; ACLS (advanced cardiac life support), no. BLS is taught to laypersons as well as health care professionals; laypersons with this very important knowledge and practical skills can and do help prevent death/injury from cardiac arrest/respiratory arrest/choking.
Assuming you are working as a aide, BLS is completely appropriate level of training for you. As an RN who doesn't work in a ED/ICU/Cardiac unit I am not ACLS trained because the training requires equipment, personnel, and knowledge that is not common in my area of practice (Psych).
