Tom FazioTom Fazio designed the course after being first hired in 1986. Les Disharoon – the former CEO of Monumental Corporation – had been trying to create a high-end club of his own since moving to the Baltimore area in 1977.
The essence of Pine Valley is its difficulty. Every shot has a forced carry off the tee, many of which are at an angle so you have to decide how much risk to take. A prime example of this is the view from the tee on the sixth hole seen below. The course is fair if you hit good shots.
Pine Valley Golf Club is a highly exclusive club. Membership is by invitation only from the board of directors. The only way a guest is allowed into the club is if they are invited and accompanied by a member, and they must have low handicaps to play the course.

Membership to Caves Valley Golf Club is by invite-only, and the maximum number of members in any given period will not exceed 600. Membership to Caves Valley Golf Club costs $20,000 in annual dues, and the initiation cost is $100,000.
The course covers about 150 acres with an interesting routing that takes you up & down the Maryland countryside.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. — But for the people that have to walk up and down Caves Valley Golf Club to watch it, this course is tough. The best golfers in the world gathered outside of Baltimore for the first time since 1962. So, it's a big draw with more than 130,000 fans expected to attend over the week.
But Caves Valley has endured by relying on the principle that, even in the age of texting and emails, face-to-face relationships still matter in business. The club's members include Ravens owner and staffing company mogul Steve Bisciotti, Under Armour founder Kevin Plank, Orioles Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr.
Safe to say, Caves Valley's 962 acres northwest of the city—rarely seen and stunningly secluded despite being 25 minutes from downtown—are about as exclusive as it gets in Baltimore, or anywhere.
