This is due to not only technology moving forward into a new standard, but the fact that the number of IPv4 addresses is nearly exhausted on a global level.
As a network administrator, your consumer technology may actually be ahead of some of your business technology in this regard. Comcast, Verizon, and T-Mobile are just a few service providers that have deployed IPv6 extensively both internally and externally for their users.
