You must use the 1 on the top row of the 'typewriter' keys - not the numeric keyboard. Do you remember to hold the CTRL while tapping the 1 key ?

Cell width. First one is that the cell width is not wide enough to display the content of the cell. Example: the cell contains a date value & the cell width is narrow. In above image, the cell value contains date as 7/14/2015 which is getting displayed in Formula Bar box.
