Slash, the label responsible for foisting these pioneer punk bands on the world, was born in the minds of staffers working at the L.A.-based punk magazine of the same name, back in 1978:
Of course, the Germs’ full-length LPs on Slash are still out there for you to enjoy now (while the West declines steadily day by day), but Ms. Spheeris’ movie includes some great grainy footage of their L.A. club gigs from those early slash-‘n-burn years that are naturally much more raw than the band’s studio recordings.
The LAPD, in a strange latter-day echo of its notorious Sunset Strip crackdowns of 1967 (carried out on a much more docile generation of harmless, blonde white kids in turtleneck sweaters and bangs) now went after this new and different crop of fresh, young troublemakers, an angry, spitting, anti-cop, anti- “peace and love” crowd…anti-everything, maybe, except for alcohol and music.
RedOctane realised that the guitar-shaped peripheral was what they called ‘the magic sauce’ – the little extra ingredient that made the game special. The 47 playable songs it featured were expanded to 64 for Guitar Hero II, which became the fifth-biggest selling game of 2006.
Guitar Hero, a simple, clever computer game that distilled the essence of playing a musical instrument down to the push of a button, and that became a revenue stream so great that it suggested a new and unseen future for the flagging business of flogging records, nearly didn’t reach its Tipping Point.
The game hit stores in October 2007, carrying the sub-title Legends Of Rock, another subtle parent-persuader. It featured 73 songs, and was available across Playstation and Xbox platforms, and this time Wii, PC and Mac too. Activision called it “our largest product launch ever”.
Then a company called Activision bought RedOctane, paying $100m to acquire Guitar Hero. A few months later, Harmonix was purchased by MTV Networks [they would go on to develop the rival Rock Band game]. With Harmonix gone, the third edition of the Guitar Hero franchise was developed instead by Neversoft, an Activision subsidiary whose team had become so obsessed with the first editions of Guitar Hero that they spent their weekends off playing it.
Ironically, for a platform that has produced a new, unexpected and much-needed revenue stream for the dying business of selling music, Slash didn’t actually make much money from Guitar Hero .
The company decided to address the issue for the third edition. Slash, the man who would ultimately ‘tip’ Guitar Hero into popular culture, had already encountered the game, and was at best ambiguous about its pleasures.

The label was formed in 1978 by Bob Biggs. Biggs , a painter, initiated the label with a seven-inch single from the Germs in 1978. A full album from that band was released the next year, and X 's Los Angeles followed in 1980. The label was distributed through Jem until 1981 when that company went bankrupt. Slash then entered into a distribution deal with Warner Bros., a move that was among the first collaborations between a self-started indie and a major label. During the time of this arrangement, the label released albums by prominent Los Angeles punk and rock and roll bands, including Fear, The Blasters, L7 and Los Lobos, as well as comparable punk and garage rock bands such as Austin's Rank and File and Boston's Del Fuegos .
The label flourished even after the magazine stopped in 1980. A subsidiary, Ruby Records, was started in 1981; Ruby released albums by Misfits, Dream Syndicate, and The Gun Club. By the mid-1980s, Slash had branched out beyond Southern California, releasing albums by Robyn Hitchcock and Burning Spear .
As of 2018, Slash solely exists as a reissue label. Between 2016 and 2017, Warner Music, the parent company of Slash, sold off the rights to several former Slash artists; this included the sale of Violent Femmes to Concord Music, Failure to PIAS Recordings, Soul Coughing to Swedish indie Woah Dad!, and Grant Lee Buffalo to Chrysalis Records .
When London Records president Roger Ames moved to Warner Music Group, he retained the rights to London and Slash, and the back catalogue of Slash was acquired by Warner (excluding Rammstein and Harvey Danger ). In 2003, Ames relicensed the use of the name Slash back to Bob Biggs, who then relaunched the label. ...
Universal Music Group (the owner of American Decca) was formed through the merger of the MCA and PolyGram Records families, the latter of which owned London Records, in 2000 and closed Slash as an active label.
