sediment in streams is transported through the channel network along trunk streams. When in balance, the amount of sediment eroded equals the amount deposited elsewhere in the channel.

It is a feature of rivers that are supplied with large loads of sand and gravel. Most likely to occur when a river has variable discharges. The sand and gravel banks are generally unstable and easily eroded. As a consequence, the channel becomes very wide in relation to its depth.
