Non-degree admission is an option for individuals who would like to take graduate-level courses without committing to a certificate or degree-program. Non-degree applicants include visiting students, individuals taking courses for personal/professional enrichment, or individuals taking prerequisite course work for later application to an advanced degree program. At ECU, there are two categories of non-degree applicants:

Under these programs, selected students from ECU’s Honors College are guaranteed entry into these top graduate programs upon completion of their undergraduate degree provided they satisfy program requirements. These programs are restricted to North Carolina residents and serve as a pathway for a select group of Honors students to pursue their dreams by reserving their space in a doctoral program’s entering class four years into the future.

If you don't have a uni degree, your professional work experience could qualify you for entry to a Graduate Certificate course, and , if you're successful, onto a Diploma or a Masters.
A postgraduate research degree involves the production of a written body of work, known as a thesis. Identifying a topic, developing a proposal, conducting the research and writing the thesis are key stages of a research degree.

Admissions to a graduate program at ECU is based on an evaluation of an applicant’s overall record, experience, personal qualifications, and proposed area of study. Applications and supporting credentials are reviewed by the Office of Graduate Admissions and by the graduate program to which you seek admission. The criteria used for admission decisions vary according to programs and schools/colleges and reflect an evaluation of the applicant’s potential for graduate work. The Graduate Council established guidelines for admission types, and those types are identified below.
All ECU graduate programs require students to successfully complete a comprehensive assessment. Speech-language pathology candidates are required to take and pass a final comprehensive examination, which may be taken upon completion of enrollment in all didactic courses required for the degree in the major area of study. Communication sciences candidates are also required to take and pass a final comprehensive examination based on required core and area of emphasis coursework, including structured electives.
The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders has gained national attention in groundbreaking research. Our faculty's findings have led to the development of devices and methods that have made a difference for people living with speech-language conditions.
