Upscale resort with sprawling grounds and a picturesque mountain setting
The upscale Westin Mission Hills Golf Resort & Spa has plenty to offer business travelers, vacationing families, golfers, and tennis enthusiasts. Set on a somewhat isolated site in Rancho Mirage, the sprawling resort has 512 guest rooms that are spacious and well-equipped, but they're overdue for a refresh.
The Westin is located on 320 acres in Rancho Mirage, about a 20-minute drive east of downtown Palm Springs. While it’s a quiet area and isolated in terms of walking to restaurants and shops, there are plenty of options less than a five-minute drive.
Vaulted ceilings and lots of space give guest rooms an airy vibe, but the lack of vibrant colors and muted lighting make them a bit drab and dated. They were last renovated in 2003, and while they have quality reddish-brown wood furniture and a contemporary look, the two-tone brown carpet, tan walls, upholstery, and drapes lack energy.
This sprawling, Spanish Mission-style resort has a casual yet upscale ambiance. Its beautiful grounds are meticulously maintained and highlighted by large fountains, ponds with waterfalls, and stately rows of towering palms.
This desert resort’s amenities are squarely focused on providing a relaxing environment where guests can pursue their favorite activities. True to its name, golf is a priority here, with two championship-caliber courses designed by Pete Dye and Gary Player. It also has a pro shop and conducts clinics.
The longest hole on the front nine, #7 is another one to really watch out for. “There’s a long carry to the fairway, but the hole is just getting started,” says Clayton. “You need a good shot to land on this green.” On your way, you’re faced with a huge lake hard left of the green, so your bail out is right into deep grass bunkers.
The back nine is easier than the front, but this long par-4 hole with water in the landing area will definitely get your attention. “Stay right to stay dry,” advises Clayton. Then you are faced with a shot over a lake to a green surrounded by bunkers and water. “Long is your only miss here.”.
