That’s bad news for all the players lucky enough to make the cut, because this year the South Course is playing much, much harder than the North, and it’s not even close. The South Course, which hosted the 2008 U.S. Open won by Tiger Woods, has always been a more difficult test than its sibling track.
However, another fact worth mentioning is that over time statistics have shown that some courses might be really harder than others. Not only that those courses require more amount of time and effort, but they are also more challenging that a significant number of students quit along the way.
It is the host of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open (along with the South Course). The North Course is shorter and less expensive than its brother. For many, it is more scenic than the South, having more picture-perfect opportunities along the track.
In other words, the course at the bottom (that is number 1) is rated hardest while the course at the top (that is number 10) is rated easiest. So, based on the ratings, engineering courses are the hardest to study! Which do you think is the hardest course?
The North Course is shorter and less expensive than its brother. For many, it is more scenic than the South, having more picture-perfect opportunities along the track. The North Course is more popular for the less-experienced golfer but will still put up a good fight for the better ones.
Why is the South so much tougher than the North? At the Farmers Insurance Open, which is played on both Torrey courses, the scoring average on the South is always higher than it is on the North, sometimes by as many as three or four strokes.
The green is one of the better ones on the North and is well defended and has sufficient movement so golfer can rest easy until the final putt is holed. Playing Pelican Hill is not a cheap ticket but if you should be tempted to enjoy all the pampering be sure to play the North layout.
No, the Pacific Ocean doesn't count. So sticking one there on 18 just feels a bit off. The 18th is also the easiest hole on the property. In 2008, it played easier than any other hole, according to par.
It is very difficult: Extraordinary length, narrow fairways, deep rough, punishing bunkers and multi-tiered greens make it one of the toughest layouts anywhere. And you can't argue with the theater of 2008 or the champion it identified. On both counts Torrey gets an A+.
"Torrey South is fair yet very difficult from the back tees driven by both length (7,700 yards) and challenging approach shots. Difficult yet still fair for the scratch golfer but very challenging if you're not much longer than average off the tee."
This is one of the nicest courses in Orange County and one of the best in the US. The only true problem is it's always a 5 hour round regardless of your start time. They used to have one GREAT marshal named Mike who was personable and moved everyone along so the average round was 4-4 1/2 hours and he was helpful too.
Ford noted that many Peli- can Hill members have their preferred caddies. During the summer, Pelican Hill has an average of 50 forecaddies on the course every, more if it's a tournament. It takes four to six weeks to be a certified fore caddie.

A list of all 49 courses used by the PGA Tour in 2018-19 – compiled from ShotLink data and released by GolfWeek – shows that two easiest courses played on tour last season were La Quinta Country Club and the Jack Nicklaus Course at PGA West. Both of which are part of the three-course rotation of the desert's PGA event.
I have the opportunity to play Torrey Pines in the coming weeks. I can play the north course for half the price as the south. Both are at the same time (early afternoon so not even sure if we would get the full 18 in.)
The North is enjoyable, but it's just not the same as the South. I play both pretty regularly being a San Diego Local, I choose the South most of the time. The North is much easier. South is even better if you play before the tournament with all the stands up.
This USGA 76.4-rated course features tight fairways, dense roughs and greens that may prompt you to schedule an eye exam after you inevitably misread them. It shouldn’t surprise you that the West Course was rated as the toughest course on the entire PGA Tour schedule for the 2020-21 season.
Open rotation are challenging, the South Course at Torrey Pines is among the most demanding. The length alone, which spans more than 7,800 yards from the black tees, makes it a test of physical endurance unlike many other courses used by the PGA Tour. The par-72 venue boasts a USGA rating of 78.8 and challenges players to stop their approach shots on greens that sit right against the edge of cliffs over the Pacific Ocean. Tight fairways and deep bunkers that seem unavoidable await anyone that plays at Torrey Pines South.
This nearly 7,600-yard monster boasts a rating of 76.5 from the U.S. Open tees, which means scratch golfers can expect to shoot at least four strokes over the par of 72. From the farthest tees used by regular players, its rating of 73.7 is a bit more manageable.
As the birthplace of golf, the United Kingdom has some of the most iconic courses in the world, but not all of them are considered as challenging as modern venues. Northern Ireland’s Royal County Down is home to one of the most diabolical courses in the world, however, on its Championship Links. The USGA has given the par-71 course a rating of 74.8 and a slope rating of 142 from the blue tees, which is just shy of the maximum difficulty grade of 155.
27. Champion Course At PGA National Golf Club — Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. You’d have to expect a real challenge from the top course at PGA National Golf Club — and you’ll be in for one if you ever play the Champion Course.
Another of his notorious courses, this one part of the six PGA West venues in La Quinta, has a USGA slope rating of 148 from the black tees (remember, the maximum grade is 155).
I remember during our second year in engineering when we took social science courses (GSP 201, GSP 202, etc). A lot of us in engineering admitted that social science courses are really hard. To me, it was quite stressful trying to memorize a lot of definitions from different schools of thought, arguments, and counter-argument, dates, etc.
The ratings in this post are based on ratings from different sources which I put together to get a clearer pattern.
I know that not everyone will agree with the ratings here. That is expected. If you do not agree with the ratings please write your own rating of hardest courses in the comment box below.
The North Course is more popular for the less-experienced golfer but will still put up a good fight for the better ones. The North is bordered on its north end by the Torrey Pines State Reserve. Tees: Kikuyu overseeded with Rye. Fairways: Kikuyu overseeded with Rye. Greens: Bentgrass with Poa Annua.
The Torrey Pines North Course was newly Renovated in 2016 by Tom Weiskopf. It is the host of the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open (along with the South Course). The North Course is shorter and less expensive than its brother.
