The Torrey Pines South Course is the more challenging of the two and is the host of the 2008 & 2021 U.S. Open Championships. The South course was originally designed by William Bell, Sr. in 1957, and is home to the Farmers Insurance Open PGA Golf Tournament (along with the North Course).
The 18th is also the easiest hole on the property. In 2008, it played easier than any other hole, according to par. And at the Farmers, it plays as the second easiest hole because the 6th is played as a par-5.Jun 16, 2021
One of the easiest courses on the PGA Tour 2K21, TPC River Highlands is one of eight new courses added to this year's game. This 18 hole course has a par 70, normal bounces, as well as fast average speeds on the green.
The U.S. Golf Association has spent years analyzing the South Course and devising mischievous, maniacal ways to make it harder, much harder. One way is playing it as a par 71 instead of par 72 by turning a par 5 into a par 4. Another is to grow the rough, harden the fairways, quicken the greens, tweak the tees.Jun 14, 2021
It is very difficult: Extraordinary length, narrow fairways, deep rough, punishing bunkers and multi-tiered greens make it one of the toughest layouts anywhere. And you can't argue with the theater of 2008 or the champion it identified. On both counts Torrey gets an A+.Jun 16, 2021

Quincy DownsQuincy Downs is a traditional course that presents a lot of exciting scenarios for golfers. It is a very long par 70 course at more than 7,000 yards. The sheer distance of the holes and the fact that the greens are firm make it one of the hardest PGA 2K21 courses in the game.Nov 29, 2021

1) Hole #3, South Course, Par 3, 201 yards – One of the shortest par 3's on the course and one of the hardest. This is Torrey Pines signature hole. It is one of the most picturesque holes in all of golf.Jun 7, 2021
Course Records The North Course record is 61, by Mark Brooks in 1990 (second round, nine birdies and one eagle). The “Old” South Course record is 62, by Tiger Woods in 1999 (third round Buick Invitational, eight birdies and one eagle).
Torrey Pines was highly ranked in GOLF's Top 100 Courses You Can Play, but our course raters are conflicted over its architectural value. Originally designed by William Bell in the late 1950s, the North and South courses have both been renovated since, the South by Rees Jones, the North by Tom Weiskopf.Jan 23, 2020
It all begins with the 7th hole becoming the 1st hole, just like the Parks and Recreation department for the city of San Diego intended for us back in 2019. Comparing the two holes — 1 and 7 — it’s clear that the latter has more spice to it.
Torrey Pines’ 18th is afforded a lot of love because of what Tiger Woods did on it back in 2008. But it definitely doesn’t get the golf course architecture nerds excited. For starters, the water hazard shy of that green holds a distinct purpose: making players think about risk vs. reward, especially from the rough.
As pointed out in other reviews, there is a high degree of redundancy at Torrey Pines South, designed first by William Bell, touched by others, but basically redone by Rees Jones. Mr. Jones has built several wonderful courses, but they do all reflect a similar style in terms of bunkering and green shapes.
Television exposure has helped a good number of courses gain wide global visibility. The South Course at Torrey Pines is one of the leading beneficiaries. There's little doubt golfers throughout the globe will long remember the incredible putt Tiger Woods holed at the 72nd hole of the '08 US Open to tie Rocco Mediate. The event was indeed memorable but the totality of compelling architecture at the South is lacking.
I have the opportunity to play Torrey Pines in the coming weeks. I can play the north course for half the price as the south. Both are at the same time (early afternoon so not even sure if we would get the full 18 in.)
The North is enjoyable, but it's just not the same as the South. I play both pretty regularly being a San Diego Local, I choose the South most of the time. The North is much easier. South is even better if you play before the tournament with all the stands up.

Jeff Lewis (Panelist since 2003; has played 97 of the World Top 100): Torrey’s ranking is extremely high. It’s hard not to get a kick out of walking in the footsteps of our heroes when certain venues routinely host huge, televised events.
