CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. - For golfers, big cities like Los Angeles can be intimidating. One pictures over-priced green fees and overbooked tee times. This is why, after all, private clubs flourish in big cities: They allow you to get away from the rat race and golf in peace.
"We wanted to fight the stereotype of difficulty," says Michael Swyney, sales manager of Pacific Palms Conference Resort, on whose grounds the golf courses are laid out. "We wanted to make the courses playable and enjoyable, and keep rates down."
Pacific Palms Conference Resort hosts hundreds of corporate events every year, so the course gets lots of scramble and outing play. On the day we visited, a group of Genie construction equipment company executives had taken over the course.

Let me set the stage by saying, I’m an active duty Army guy with two kids under five. Needless to say I don’t get to play a ton of golf. But, I love the game and desperately want to get better and play more. Maybe this experience isn’t unique, but it was a first for me.
My tee time was at 7:10 am on Ike and we teed off just about on time. We were stuck behind a pretty slow foursome all day, but I was enjoying the course and perfect weather so much I didn’t mind the relaxed pace. All in all, we finished in just under five hours. The Eisenhower course was in excellent shape.
For the entire front nine, the group ahead of us were playing as a sixsome (yikes!) and were quite slow. On the back nine, I guess the marshal caught up with them and broke them up into two threesomes, but they were still just as slow. So the round took about 5 hours and 20 minutes. But I really didn’t mind taking my time on such a great course.
