A student portal is an online gateway where students can log into a school website to access important program information[12]. Student portals also contain information on courses offered, transcripts, email programs, timetables, exam schedules and department contact numbers.

Announcements. Announcements are an ideal way to post time-sensitive information critical to course success. Add announcements for these types of course activities: You can add, edit, and delete announcements from the Announcements page. When you add an announcement, you can also send it as an email to students in your course.
Use announcements to share important, time-sensitive information.
If you edit the announcement and select email copy and post it again, the email isn't sent.
If you schedule an announcement to display in the future, the email check box is disabled.
If you no longer want to schedule the announcement, clear the Schedule announcement check box.
Most announcements disappear from the activity stream when students view them within their courses. If you schedule an announcement, it also appears in the activity stream at the scheduled time. Students receive a course announcement and an activity stream notification about course groups they need to join.
You can insert audio and video recordings in your course announcements.
To add an attachment to your discussion, click the Choose File button [1]. If required by your institution, you will need to select usage right settings for your attachment. To manage usage right settings, click the Set usage rights icon [2]. In the Usage Right drop-down menu [3], select one of five usage rights.
The Allow users to comment option is persistent, meaning the option you select when creating or editing an announcement will carry over when you create a new announcement in the course. However, the Users must post before seeing replies option is not persistent.

Canvas Course Announcements is a native tool in all Canvas courses, which instructors may use to post information that the entire class should know. Course announcements are often used to welcome students to the course, and post updates and reminders about course content.
Canvas Announcements can also be replied to, making them a potential Question & Answer tool. Replies to announcements may occur inside of Canvas or as a reply to an email notification. You can allow “likes” by students or only by graders to add an additional level of interaction. Announcements may be available as an RSS feed or an external RSS feed may be added to post to your Canvas Announcements.
Announcements are posts with no assignments. You can use them to give notices or reminders to your students. Announcements appear in chronological order. If you want, you can move an older post to the top. You can draft and schedule announcements and control who comments or replies to posts.
On the Streampage, find the posted announcement and click Add class comment.
On the Stream page, click Share something with your classand enter your announcement.
Unless you’re posting to multiple classes, you can post an announcement to individual students. You can’t post to more than 100 students at a time.
