At the present time, you cannot obtain your California handgun education card from Handgun Safety Course. Our course videos feature a combination of professional educators (who double as professional actors), entertaining storylines, and up‐to‐date scenarios that give you one of the most effective ways to learn safe handgun operator practices.

five yearsThe FSC is valid for five years. Per 26860(g), an individual who is exempt from needing a FSC is also exempt from performing the safe handling demonstration. Handgun safety certificates should be expired at this point in time.

Generally, if you want to carry a loaded firearm on you for protection, you must have a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit. CCWs are issued by the sheriff and there is a bit of a process, but SDCGO has made the process easy to follow. Check out our resources page for details: www.SDCGO.org/CCW
If you have children, you MUST store your firearms locked or in a safe. Children cannot have access to firearms, according to California law. Additionally, some cities (like the city of San Diego) have laws that require you store your firearm locked or locked up any time the firearm is not in your direct control. Here is an example of a safe that will secure your firearm, but still give you access to it in case of an emergency:
Unless you have a Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permit, transporting a firearm in public should be done with a closed, locked, firearms case. The firearm should be completely unloaded. Pro Tip: get a hard-sided case that you can lock, put your unloaded firearm in the case, and lock the case.

There are four issuing categories in which the County of San Diego issues concealed weapons. Applicants will be required to submit documentation to support and demonstrate their need for any of the categories. The categories are:
A single payment in the form of cash or check made payable to San Diego Sheriff’s Department shall be submitted for renewal of a CCW permit as shown below:
2103 that goes into effect on January 1, 2019. This bill requires CCW courses of training be at least eight hours, but shall not be required to exceed 16 hours. Assembly bill 2103 also requires the CCW course of training to include instruction on firearm handling, shooting technique, and to include a demonstration by the applicant, of shooting proficiency and safe handling of each firearm the applicant will be licensed to carry. The training will include live-fire exercises conducted on a firing range.
For any new license applicant the course of training for issuance of a license is eight hours of instruction on firearm safety, firearm handling, shooting technique and laws regarding the permissible use of a firearm.
The concealed weapons license allows the licensee to carry a pistol revolver, or other firearm, capable of being concealed upon the person.
