In Wisconsin, there are very few regulations in place to hunt coyotes. According to the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR), a small game license is required. You can hunt coyotes year-round, day or night. There is also no limit on how many you can kill.
In the early years, some individuals did use snares in a less than responsible, ethical and selective manner. This type of activity resulted in a complete ban on their use. Those non-selective, lethal, dryland snaring devices and methods have been illegal in Wisconsin for decades.
Trappers need to obtain permission before trapping on any private land, even if entry is by public waterways and the trap is placed or staked in the water. Unprotected Species: opossums, skunks, porcupines, woodchucks and weasels are unprotected and may be trapped year-round by persons possessing a trapping license.
During the open season, no person may use sight exposed bait consisting of feathers, animal flesh, fur, hide or entrails within 25 feet of any trap, snare or cable restraint, except for enclosed trigger traps or cage traps as defined in s. NR 10.001 (5j) and (9c).
The Wis. Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) does not pay a bounty for coyotes.
Can baiting be used to hunt coyotes in Wisconsin? It is illegal to use bait to hunt small game mammals, migratory birds, game birds, wild turkey and furbearing animals. However, hunting over agricultural crops and wildlife food plots planted and left standing is legal.
Shooting chipmunks and thirteen-lined ground squirrels with a small caliber rifle, pellet gun or shotgun is legal in Wisconsin. It is legal on property you own or occupy as long as discharging a weapon is legal within the municipal boundaries where the damage is occurring.
Trapping and hunting of coyotes on your property are legal year-round without a DNR license.
(1) Tags. Each trap used under a trapping license shall be tagged with a metal tag stamped with the name and address or customer identification number of the operator of the trap.
Only the landowner or his or her family members may set a trap on a beaver dam. This privilege cannot be transferred from the landowner to an agent or employee; the landowner cannot authorize another person to trap on a beaver dam.
Age. No age restrictions apply to trapping. All trappers must obtain a trapping license regardless of age. A minimum age of 10 years is recommended for the successful completion of a Trapper Education program.

Obtain a trapping license, permit or tag for someone else except a parent may purchase for their minor child/children.

The trapper education course provides a solid foundation upon which a safe and successful trapping career can be built. It also helps trappers understand the importance of maintaining good relationships with landowners, other outdoor enthusiasts and managers of our natural resources.
You are required by law to successfully complete a trapper education course before purchasing your first trapping license. An exception is granted to those actively engaged in farming as defined in Wis. State Statute 102.04 (3).
Kids under 16 years of age may trap without a license under the direct supervision of a licensed trapper.
Harvest authorizations must be added in order to trap otters. People 16 and older may purchase a mentored trapping license for $10 and trap alongside a licensed trapper. Customers may only purchase this license twice, though the purchase does not have to be in consecutive years.

In addition to waiving the 18-year-old age requirement, in order to reduce person-to-person contact and reduce the spread of coronavirus, the Department has waived the in-person field test requirement for trapper education students until January 1, 2021.
Those using a mentored trapping license may not trap for fish er and bobcat. Successful permit winners who are 16 and over must be trapper education certified in order to trap for these two limited-draw species. Information on permit drawing for fisher and bobcat is available on the DNR website.
