As for the whetstones, if you go to a Bandit Armory, you can collect whetstones from enemies, or they can be found in chests, barrels, and crates. One trip through a Bandit Armory should give you the number of whetstones you need for the Grinder.

Bandit Camps, Bandit Logging Camps, and Bandit Trapper Camps are the best places to find Coarse Thread. These will drop from enemies as well as be inside barrels and crates that you can destroy. The best place so far to farm Coarse Thread has been the Bandit Logging Camp and Bandit Trapper Camp in the central part of the Farbane Woods.
Coarse stones are sharpening stones in the 150 to 325 grit range, with abrasive particles of about 45 to 100 microns in size. These stones provide aggressive cutting action allowing for fast material removal, setting the stage for efficient honing on finer stones.
Coarse Stone can be found while mining and is used in Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting and Engineering.
Badlands is the prefect place for farming Solid Stone. All of the rock elementals have a chance to drop the stone along with Mithirill veins.
You can get Heavy Stone from Iron Deposits. A couple good places to mine Iron is Western Plaguelands, Feralas and I like Arathi Highlands as well. If you're leveling JC I suggest keeping your Heavy Stone for they will come in handy and get you up to skill level 130.
for levels 18-23 or so, the best place for easy farming of coarse stone is Remtravel's Excavation in Darkshore. The stone golems drop 1-2 ~50% of the time and also drop smooth pebbles (+4 damage shot). Getting ready to move up to the elementals in Stonetalon ... they drop coarse stone as well as elemental earth's.
