The sixteenth is the last par-three hole and can yield birdies, however players will need to hit the small green that is surrounded by bunkers. The seventeenth hole, Riviera's longest, heads uphill, downwind, and northeast towards the clubhouse, while the eighteenth is a world-famous finishing hole.
The first hole, a short par five, is a relatively easy beginning hole. The tee is elevated 75 feet (23 m) above the fairway, tempting players to hit driver but out of bounds on the left side and a barranca crossing the fairway make players cautious. Scores range from eagle to double bogey.
It returned in 1973, where it has remained, with the exception of 1983 and 1998, for a total of 75 times through 2020.
The greens at Riviera are Poa annua, common for the West, but the fairways and rough are Kikuyu grass. A tough, dense pasture grass originally from East Africa, it had been used at a nearby polo field in the 1930s and was also planted on hillsides to prevent erosion.
The tenth hole is a very short, 315-yard (288 m) par four known as a risk-reward hole. Longer hitters can try to drive the green from the tee, but accuracy is a priority, as several bunkers surround the green. The eleventh is a long par-five where eucalyptus trees and a barranca come into play. The twelfth is a long par-four, often into the wind, that plays to a narrow green surrounded by the barranca, bunkers, and trees; Bogey's Tree is named after actor Humphrey Bogart .
The par-three sixth hole is world-famous for the bunker in the middle of the green. If a player is on the wrong side of the green, they will have to make a tough decision to either putt around or chip over the bunker. The last three holes of the front are all par-four.
Boasting an incredible list of champions, The Riviera Country Club is one of golf’s ultimate tests. From tee shots that require accuracy to approach shots directly into the ocean breeze, Riviera can test a player’s game from the first shot to the last putt. See how the course stacks up against golf’s biggest stars.
HOLE 17: par 5, 590 yards#N#While it might be the longest hole at Riviera, the 17 th plays into the strength of the modern TOUR player. A powerful drive followed by a long iron makes the green reachable in two. Being on the putting surface with a chance for eagle provides insurance from the two-tiered green that slopes from back to front, creating difficult downhill putts. If you can play from below the hole location, your chances of scoring increase significantly.#N#2020 hole rank: 16
HOLE 8: par 4, 433 yards#N#When looking from tee to green on the eighth hole, it would appear the fairway is split. And in fact, it is. But come competition, TOUR players almost universally play from the left fairway, most opting for hitting a power fade that takes the left fairway bunker out of play. From there, a simple wedge into wide green can cause for an easy hole. But miss the fairway off the tee and pay the price. Scrambling on the eighth can lead to bogey or worse.#N#2020 hole rank: 6
HOLE 18: par 4, 475 yards#N#Riviera starts with an iconic hole and it ends in the same fashion. The 18 th is one of golf’s most unique and recognizable finishing holes. a blind tee shot from drastically below the level of the fairway means players must carry the hill to reach safely. If the drive can also turn a corner at the top of the hill, the approach shot becomes much easier. The natural amphitheater below the clubhouse provides the ultimate stadium-style finish to the round and tournament.#N#2020 hole rank: 5
HOLE 3: par 4, 434 yards#N#If the wind is blowing at Riviera, the third hole plays a lot harder. Designed directly into the wind, the 434-yard hole might seem like a straightforward left to right tee shot, but with overgrown areas straight ahead and to player’s right, finding the fairway is a necessity off the tee. The shallow green slopes away from the fairway but can hold an approach shot when struck well. Birdie is gettable, but so is bogey, so walking away with a par is a good thing on the third.#N#2020 hole rank: 14
The most difficult par 3 on course in 2020 was followed by the most difficult hole. The tee shot requires a power fade to turn the corner of the doglegged fairway. The approach shot is made more difficult down the stretch as the hole plays into the setting sun later in the day.
The green, guarded by a large bunker in the front, slopes severely from right to left. Long putts are common on the fourth hole, which led to players making only 25 birdies compared to 102 bogeys in 2020. 2020 hole rank: 3.

When the country club and course opened 96 years ago in 1926, it was known as the Los Angeles Athletic Club Golf Course. William P. Bell helped Thomas in the design and planning of the course. They were in charge of assembling a labor force to build the course from scratch in the Santa Monica Canyon. The entire country club and golf course cost $243,827 to build; at the time, it was one of the most expensive in golf history. The course has been modified a few times, most nota…
Riviera hosted the Los Angeles Open in 1929 and 1930, then nine consecutive years from 1945 through 1953.

Over the years, it gradually invaded the course and became the dominant species. Kikuyu provides optimal lies on close-mown fairways, but is very challenging in the spongy rough.
The course is a par 71, at a length of 7,013 yards (6,413 m) from the back tees (which has been lengthened to 7,322 yards (6,695 m) for Tour play), 6,531 yards (5,972 m) from the middle tees, and 5,907 yards (5,401 m) from the forward tees. The men's slope ratings are 74.6/135 and 72.2/130 for the back and middle tees, respectively. The ladies' slope rating is 74.3/142 for the forward tees.
