The hot favourite in the women’s race is France’s Pauline Ferrand-Prévot, a three-time world champion in XCO (she has also won five other world titles – three in cross-country team relay, one in marathon mountain bike, and one on the road).
Both men's and women's events will be held as mass-start races over a set number of laps around the 4.1-km Izu Mountain Bike Course. The first cyclist across the line wins gold.
The men’s MTB race takes place on 26 July 2021, with the women’s race a day later.

Mountain bike has only been on the Games programme since Atlanta 1996, with both men’s and women’s races making their debut in the southern U.S. city.
A descent packed with rocks and bound to make the bikes shake. The segment points towards the downtown area of Rio de Janeiro, which is where it gets its name, and was made by Floros using rocks from a local quarry.
The course was designed by South African course designer and ex-mountain biking pro Nick Floros, who has established himself as one of the best trail builders in the world for XCO in the past few years and also built the track at Hadleigh Park for London 2012.
A descent down a 40 degree staircase made out of wooden beams and dirt, with the occasion al rock thrown in for good measure. The name also of course refers to the heat in the country – which will be stifling to say the least.
The key to the Olympic cross country mountain biking seems to be man-made but heavily technical features, with an abundance of rock gardens, jumps, pump sections, climbs and descents. It shouldn’t favour any one kind of rider over any other.
The men’s MTB event takes place on Monday, July 26 and starts at 7pm Japan time (7am British time, 1am EST in the US), followed by the women’s event on Tuesday, July 27, from 7pm Japan time (7am British time and 1am EST in the US).

The Olympic course is 3.4 miles of grassy wide-open stretches interspersed with man-made obstacles and serious slopes — a marked difference from the more level terrain four years ago in London.
