Beginning September 1, 2021, HB1927 made it legal in Texas for most people 21 or over to carry a handgun in a holster without a permit both openly and/or concealed. This law modified the previous open carry law from 2016 by eliminating the requirement to have a license to carry.
The LTC-101 certificate is good for 2 years after completing the online concealed carry class. This means that you have 2 years to take the proficiency demonstration and submit it to DPS. The LTC applicant must also be 21 at the time the application is submitted to DPS.

LTC, what's the difference? CHL” stands for concealed handgun license and “LTC” stands for license to carry. In Texas we only have one permit and it is now called a license to carry or “LTC”, we no longer use the term concealed handgun license “CHL”.

This is the best way to get your LTC. Period. My husband got his a few years back, so I decided to get mine before the election. I enrolled in the training which was simple and straightforward. After I got my LTC-101 I went to my local range for the range exam and I now have my LTC.

Answer: Starting January 1, 2016 Texas will allow registered license holders to open carry in public. Per HB 48 (83rd Legislature), continuing education is no longer required for LTC renewal. License holders will simply apply online and submit the supporting documents for discounted fees or special conditions.

The Texas LTC shooting test passing score is 175 points out of 250 points or a score of 70%. The state allows for three chances to pass the shooting test.
