Within the People roster on Canvas, students that have dropped will have the inactive tag displayed to the right of their name. This identifier will remain next to the student’s name throughout the course unless the student is reinstated to the course.
When a student registers for a course, those students are automatically populated into the corresponding Canvas course site. Students may need to drop the course at a future point, however, and will be dropped from Banner, but are not automatically dropped from Canvas.
This task is done manually by SLCC Canvas Administrators as needed to ensure that activities or work students may have done in the course is preserved in the Canvas course record, and to cease unnecessary correspondence and notifications between the instructor and the student, who is no longer in the class.
In the course navigation menu, click Grades. In the heading of the "Student Names" column, click the vertical ellipsis ( ︙) to open the Options menu. From the "Student Names Options" menu, select Show, and then Inactive Enrollments.
When a student withdraws from a course after the first week of classes, the student remains in the course roster in Canvas, but is given an enrollment status of "inactive".
Unfortunately, Canvas does not provide a way to filter out or hide inactive students within the People tool at this time. As a workaround, you can view a list of your students in the Grades area, where you can filter by active/inactive students.
Click the Drop this Course button to un-enroll from the course. You will no longer be able to see the course roster, communicate with people in the course, and see course events or notifications.
Please be aware that it can take 24-48 hours for drops to be reflected in Canvas, after a change has been made through the Registrar's Office.
The status of your course displays in the upper-right corner of your course's Home page. Your course must be published before students can access it. Once a course has been published and a student submission has been graded, the course can no longer be unpublished.
