In Michigan, anyone born on or after July 1, 1996, must successfully complete a boater safety course approved by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in order to operate a motorized vessel. Anyone born after December 31, 1978, require boater education in order to operate a personal watercraft (PWC).

16 years of ageThose less than 12 years of age: May legally operate a boat powered by a motor of more than 6 horsepower, but no more than 35 horsepower, only if they: have been issued a boating safety certificate and have it on board and. are directly supervised on board by a person at least 16 years of age.
It is illegal to operate a boat with a BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) of . 08 or higher. This is the same legal standard that applies to motor vehicle drivers. Law enforcement will typically administer a breath, blood or urine test to determine whether someone is legally impaired.
Any law enforcement agency within its own jurisdiction can board a boat when faced with “exigent circumstances,” such as someone clearly operating a vessel to endanger, boating under the influence, displaying gross negligence, and so on.
Those at least 16 years of age and born after December 31,1978, may operate a PWC legally only if they have obtained a boating safety certificate. Those born on or before December 31, 1978, may operate a PWC legally without restrictions.
All boats operating on Michigan waters must carry and, if required, have in operation, acceptable personal flotation devices (PFDs), visual distress signals, fire extinguishers, sounding devices, backfire flame arrestor, ventilation systems, and navigation lights as required by federal law.
In Michigan, registration fees for power boats under 16 feet are $14 and it costs $42 for boats 16 to 21 feet every three years.
Even though Michigan law doesn't require boat insurance, it may still be necessary if you plan to dock your boat — many marinas require proof of insurance. Lenders also typically require a set amount of coverage if you're financing your boat.
A “wake” is the waves created as a vessel travels through the water. A “no-wake zone” is an area where vessels are expected to travel at slow (idle) speeds to minimize the wake. Most people think of no-wake zones as the speed bumps or school zones of the water, and rightfully so.
Michigan life jacket laws: All vessels must be equipped with a PFD for each person on board or being towed. Michigan law requires all children under 6 years of age to wear a USCG-approved Type I or II PFD when riding on the open deck of any vessel while underway.
