I recently learned that the idiom for Beat it! in German "Zieh Leine!" literally is supposed to mean "Drag the leash!" like a dog dragging their leash behind them as they are running away, or it could also mean "Draw the line/trace" Like painting or drawing a trace behind you as you walk away.

So I can basically understand anything I watch in Netflix in German when German subtitles are on, but without them my understanding decreases significantly. Should I rather keep subtitles on and passively train my ears, or turn them off and actively attempt?

The problem is that people don’t often speak that nice, clean Hochdeutsch spoken in Dokus or learning materials.
