The Classroom Pre-Licensing Course is available through high schools, colleges, and many driving schools and is taught in person or via distance learning. An Online Pre-Licensing Course is also available to license applicants at least 18 years of age.

5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course (Now Available Online!!) ABLE 2 Driving School, Inc. is NYS DMV approved and will provide you with the MV-278 certificate required to sign up for the NYS DMV road test.
Cuomo approved in October 2019. The 5-Hour Online Pre-Licensing Course, released in December 2020, lets you work on your training anytime 24/7. Because there is no instructor guiding the class, you can complete the online program at your own pace, logging on and off as needed.

$505-Hour Pre-Licensing Course Virtual Zoom are approved to conduct the 5-Hour Pre-Licensing Course. The course is a requirement by NYS to schedule your state road test. The course fee of $50 can be paid by cash or check when you come to pick up your certificate.
30 pointsThe NYS DMV Road Test Evaluation Sheet For every mistake, you may accumulate 5, 10, or 15 points. If you accumulate over 30 points, that's a fail. However, if you get 30 points or less, that's a pass.
The road test in NY lasts around 15 minutes. You might have to turn left and right, parallel park, and drive through an intersection with traffic lights and stop signs. The tester may ask you to make a three-point turn and to drive in moderate to heavy traffic.
Test fees. The fee for up to 2 road tests for a non-commercial license was included in your $10.00 driver license permit application fee. If you do not pass your first 2 tests, you must pay another $10.00 fee for up to 2 more tests. There is no refund if you do not take both tests.
Your examiner will expect that you already know how to parallel park for drivers test, but don't worry, you don't have to do it perfectly. The important thing is just to get your car parallel to the curb, and close enough to not be an obstruction or hazard.
Your certificate will be mailed within 24-48 hours following the completion of the class.
Once your class starts, you must be visible at all times. A Zoom class link will be sent to you by Able 2 Driving school by 6:30 pm the day before your class.

Applicants who complete the online version of the course will NOT receive a Pre-Licensing Course Completion Certificate (MV-278). The course provider will report course completions to DMV automatically and applicants will NOT have to show a completion certificate when appearing for the road test.
