Searching for a new job is a time-consuming endeavor. By some estimates, the typical worker takes about six weeks to apply for, interview and finally land a new job offer. And across any industry and level of work, there’s one step to the process that’s bound to slow down even the most qualified and enthusiastic candidate: the cover letter.
While a good job candidate can increase their odds of cutting through the noise by perfecting their resume and cover letter, it’s still not the most surefire way to land an interview.
Cover letters only matter if job seekers do this. While cover letters can give candidates a leg up on the competition, they come with a major caveat. Companies are increasingly relying on applicant tracking systems, often shortened to ATS, and artificial intelligence software to review resumes.
1. Contact details. At the top of your cover letter, include the following information: Name: Your full name should be the focal point of your cover letter header (use a large font size and bold text) Phone number: If you’re applying for a job in a different city, state, or country, include your area/country code.
Before signing your cover letter, close it by writing “Sincerely,” and then leaving a gap of three to four lines. Then type out your name. You can print out your cover letter and sign your name in the gap you left. Or you can use an electronic signature if you prefer.
Font style: Keep your cover letter font professional. Use a conventional font such as Times New Roman, Helvetica, Arial or Verdana. Avoid fancy fonts because they will come across as unprofessional to hiring managers — and might not get picked up by applicant tracking systems.

You can even connect the accomplishments on your resume to the goals of your target company in your cover letter. For example, watch how this candidate sells their relevant skills: I noticed in your job description that you’re looking for a candidate who requires little training and supervision.

How they do it can give you some insight into how to write cover letters that will make the cut. Because, if your cover letter doesn't pass muster, your resume won't even get a look. If your cover letter and resume aren't perfect, they most likely will end up in the reject pile.
And perfect means perfect - there should not be any typos or grammatical errors. Employers typically won't even consider a candidate that they deem is not qualified at first glance. It's a certainty that the person with ten years of childcare experience, and no computer experience, who applied for an Oracle programmer position won't get an interview.
