What's a W? A withdrawal from a class (W) is GPA-neutral: instead of a grade, you receive a W notation on your transcript which does not affect your GPA; you also don't earn credits for the course.
Policies and Procedures by Keyword: Leave Graduate students in good standing may take a two-semester leave of absence. Though no formal approval is required, it is suggested that students seek academic advisement.
The process of how to drop out of college depends on the school. However, at most colleges, students start the process by meeting with an academic advisor. Advisors help undergrads submit a withdrawal request. Students should also visit the financial aid office to ask about a refund for tuition.
The term “stopout” is used when a student decides college isn't working out for them at a certain period of time in their life. Their solution to that is to discontinue their education for a semester or two only to return when it is more convenient.
Failing & Then Re-Taking a Class Croskey notes that dropping a class is better than withdrawing, but withdrawing is better than failing. “A failing grade will lower the student's GPA, which may prevent a student from participating in a particular major that has a GPA requirement,” Croskey says.
As mentioned above, in most cases it's OK to drop a class, especially if you haven't dropped a class before. Colleges understand that sometimes circumstances change, and having one dropped class on your transcript won't hurt your college applications. However, there are still some considerations to keep in mind.
For example, if you are going to fail or get a “D,” it's probably better to unenroll. Additionally, if the class is causing you physical or emotional stress and health-related issues like anxiety, it's not worth sacrificing your wellbeing.
