Well, son. I’ll tell ya. If NASCAR on Ice is something that gets your blood pumping, this is the sport for you. Many races aren’t that long, and they can also bring the excitement of a good track race.
Everyone gets set up from a draw. The draw and skating order is based on how well you did in previous races, and if you sucked, then you’ll be dealt with after the adults have fun. During the start, if you aren’t there when your name is called you’re disqualified.
I mean, just know who these people are? I don’t know. Ain’t no real magic behind speedskating. Just be faster than the other people, and get that glide well when you comin’ round them turns.
Just get hype for the folks listed above. And if you bout it, bout it and don’t think he’s too old. Root for 35-year-old Shani Davis, who made his fifth Olympics this year.

Participating nations. A total of 184 athletes from 29 nations (including the IOC 's designation of Olympic Athletes from Russia) were scheduled to participate (the numbers of athletes are shown in parentheses). Colombia was scheduled to make its debut in the sport.
Short track speed skating is an umbrella term that encompasses four men's and four women's races. Each race takes place on an oval track of ice that is 111.2 meters long, while the entire sheet of ice is 60 meters long and 30 meters wide.
A few things. The first and most obvious difference is the track size—the short track events are, as the name might suggest, contested on a significantly shorter track than the speed skating events. In true make-or-break fashion, competitors in speed skating events get just one timed run on the track per distance.
Both men and women compete in the 500m (4 1/2 laps), 1000m (9 laps) and 1500m (13 1/2 laps).
Short track made its Olympic debut in 1992 at Albertville, Canada, but only four events were contested there: the men's 1000m, the women's 500m, the men's 5000m relay and the women's 3000m relay. In 1994 the men's 500m and women's 1000m were added. The men's and women's 1500m were finally added in Salt Lake City in 2002.
The guiding principle for short track speed skating is to cross the finish line first. It is, after all, a race. And while allowing skaters to tackle, block and trip their competitors would arguably make for a more entertaining spectacle, there are guidelines that prevent that sort of thing.
The format for the men's and women's 500m and 1000m are the same. The competitions begins with the first round, which features eight heats of four skaters each (total of 32 skaters). The top two finishers from each heat move on to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, the 16 skaters who advance are divided into four heats of four skaters each.
Oh yeah. In recent history, the United States, Korea, Canada and Russia have been the most successful nations on the short track. The U.S. relay teams should contend for medals in PyeongChang—the men's 5000m team of J.R. Celeski, John-Henry Krueger, Keith Carroll Jr.
Depending on the event, four or six skaters race around a tight oval track . With speeds reaching 30mph, crashes are commonplace. Overtaking is allowed but there are strict rules on impeding opponents. Races are held over 500m, 1,000m and 1500m, and there is also a men's and women's relay.
Elise Christie is the reigning overall world champion and a good bet to become the first British woman to win an Olympic short track medal. That would make amends for 2014, when she was also a medal contender but had a nightmare experience and was disqualified in all three of her events.
Short track is South Korea's most successful Olympic sport, producing 21 of their 26 golds, and the hosts' contenders will include Choi Min-jeong. Look out for Canadian couple Charles Hamelin and Marianne St-Gelais - with seven medals between them - whose post-race embraces in 2010 and 2014 captured hearts worldwide.
Steven Bradbury experienced the highs and lows of short track - in 1992, the Australian lost four litres of blood and needed 111 stitches after a rival's skate ended up in his leg. He later broke his neck in a track crash.
