But in Australia we start in January and go to December. Typically normal year first month to final month. It's weird doing the 9th month to the 5th month.
Even though the exact dates for when each season starts is slightly off, the main idea is the same. Summer is June, July, and August. Therefore, for summer break, students should get part of June, July, and most or all of August off. So school should start around the time September starts to roll in.
School could actually start and end that way but breaks would be cut short and some would be cut out all together. Teachers are required to work 187 days every school year. On 180 of the 187, we are required to teach our students. The other seven are considered Teacher Work Days. On those days, we attend professional development, study data, and prepare for students. I would love to have 3 full months for summer break but often need the breaks. Teaching school is tiring with all of the teaching, preparing, grading papers, analyzing data, attending before school duty, lunch duty, and after scho
One thing to remember, statistics can be skewed depending on how it is looked at. US schools normally state there are 180 days of school in a year but it doesn’t take into consideration additional administrative days and inclement weather (yes, they say there are days set aside for it but when you have to turn in all school materials in preparation for the end of school what good is the make up dates when there is nothing to do?).
The larger portion of the population had farm related jobs in the past. In an agrarian culture, the summer are the busiest months for growing crops, and birth of livestock. Even if you harvest in the fall the students only miss sporadically miss a few weeks at the beginning of the school year.
The starting time of schools in the American educational systems originally was based on the needs of the agricultural period of the US way back when. Some decades before, it started in September, not August ( “See you in September” song)and ended in June. Periods of fall and spring plantings originally dictated the start and end of schools.
US News gives that report based on information they receive from the school districts. For the high schools, they mention that the school has both AP courses and IB program, but only the statistics for for AP is reported never with the IB. I wonder why?
