No. Due to the pandemic, the Big Sur Marathon weekend of races was not held in April 2020 or April 2021. In addition, we canceled our other races, the Run in the Name of Love and the November Monterey Bay Half Marathon, in both 2020 and 2021.Jan 15, 2022
Some key points about Big Sur: - It is HILLY! With approximately 2,500' elevation loss and ~2,200' elevation gain, with a 2.2 mile uphill climb at mile 10 (this is the infamous Hurricane Point).
The 12K (7.4-miles) features a beautiful out-and-back course beginning and ending at the Marathon finish and is the only race course that includes a loop inside the stunning Point Lobos State Natural Reserve.
Sunday, July 24th, 2022.
26.2 milesThe Big Sur Marathon has a strict 6-hour finish time limit (chip time). This is a pace of 13:45 per mile for the 26.2 miles (8:33 per km for 42 km).
Anyone who is at least 16 years of age by April 26, 2020 and is capable of running a full marathon on a hilly course under six hours (a pace of 13:45 per mile) may register for the entry random drawing(s).
Most runners take between 16 and 20 weeks to train for a marathon. As you build up to the race, your heart, muscles and mind need to be conditioned for the exertion ahead, so following a strict training plan which gradually ups the ante and improves your fitness and stamina is very important.
The Big Sur Trail Marathon, Half Marathon & 5-Mile race is run along Old Coast Road, the first of its kind that connected the towns of Monterey and Big Sur before the road now known as Highway 1 was built. Challenging and hilly.

ARE YOU GOING TO HOLD THE APRIL 2022 BIG SUR MARATHON AND OTHER RACE DISTANCES? Updated...
The course is from Big Sur to Carmel on scenic Highway 1, the nation's first nationally-designated Scenic Highway. The course is USATF certified and is an official Boston qualifier. The course reopens to traffic at 1:00 PM, an approximate 6-hour course limit, just over a 13:45 pace per mile.
Course Time Limit. The Big Sur Marathon has a six hour time limit and will officially end at 1 PM when the course will reopen to regular two-way vehicular traffic. There will be NO support of any kind on the course (aid stations, medical, communications, etc.) for anyone not maintaining a 6-hour pace.
Per the marathon running industry policy, all entry fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. This policy applies to all entrants and is in effect whether you are injured, have an unexpected family/business emergency, have a medical emergency, etc.
But, I’m getting ahead of myself, let’s rewind to registration. My friend, Michael, and I opted to register through the VIP program. The cost is $500, and is open to I believe 450 runners (which is ~10% of race entrants). My vote it is definitely worth it.
While the race is exceptional in so many ways, you must know this is not an event where friends or family will be able to watch you on the course. The vast majority of the course is closed, leaving only the finish to race watch. Yet, the finish line also is not exactly easily accessible either, due to limited parking options.
The official race hotel, Portola Hotel, is very nice, and if I run BIg Sur again, I likely will book there. It is centrally located in Monterey, where you can walk to shops and restaurants, and easily walk to the bus for race transportation. The race expo is in the adjacent Monterey Conference Center.
It seems the largest variety of great restaurants are in Carmel. If you’re interested in a nice lunch or dinner (dinner especially), book a reservation at least a day or two in advance. One of our favorite places was Big Sur Bakery. Highly recommend it, and prepare to wait, but it’s worth the wait. The staff is oh so friendly.
Fairly compact, but nice with lots of race merchandise. We went on both Friday and Saturday, and Saturday was much more crowded. Plenty of official merchandise remained on Saturday, but last minute race needs (GU, blocks, etc.) were scarce. Note!! The race shirts this year (2019) ran very small. I am normally an XS-S, and sized up to a medium.
I do recommend driving Hwy 1 the day prior to the race if possible. It is beautiful, and it gives you a better sense of what you’re “in for” on race day. There are many places to stop, and see along the drive.
Race morning – you must ride a bus to the start! Most bus pick up times range between 4:00-4:30 a.m.! If you’re not staying at a hotel where a bus is picking up, you need to arrange to get to the bus stop, so plan accordingly.
