One of the premier races at Gulfstream Park West is the $100,000 Tropical Turf Handicap. A Grade 3 event run at a mile and a sixteenth on the turf, the race was inaugurated in 1979 and was originally run on Christmas Day as the Christmas Day Handicap. The race routinely attracts a quality group of turf horses and has been dominated by trainer Christophe Clement in recent years – he has saddled the winners in 2013, 2014 and 2015.
Gulfstream Park West has a one-mile main track which is made up of a mixture of sand and clay. Their turf course, made up primarily of Bermuda grass, is 7/8 of a mile with a quarter mile chute. It was a fitting finish: Eddie Plesa J r., a member of Calder’s Hall of Fame, was the winning trainer in the final race at the facility. Plesa’s father, Eddie Plesa Sr., was one of the very first trainers at the facility when it opened in 1971.
