Preparing for High School

Learn about everything from graduation requirements and recommended electives to becoming career ready and our focus programs. This frequently updated site contains important information for you and your soon-to-be 9th grader.

High School Choice Form

Each student is assigned to a high school based on their address. You can find the high school for your student by using our Home School Lookup tool. If you want your child to attend a different high school than the home high school assigned for your address, you will need to submit the High School Choice form by the January 31st deadline.

High School Course Requests

Students will participate in activities with their 8th grade counselor to help prepare them for high school. In February school counselors from each high school will work with 8th grade students from each middle school to make requests for 9th grade courses.

Minimum class size

The minimum class size for most LPS and summer courses is nine enrolled students. LPS will monitor advance enrollments and will notify departments and instructors of courses that do not have sufficient enrollment before the beginning of the term. Instructors should meet these classes for the first session to see if additional students enroll.

Classroom location and requests for changes

After LPS has contacted instructors to notify them that their class will be rostered in an upcoming semester, LPS will request information regarding AV and classroom needs. Since demand for seminar rooms and rooms equipped with A/V equipment is strong, instructors should submit their room requests early.

Canceling a class meeting

If you should find it necessary to cancel a class, contact your department and ask them to post a note on your classroom door. You are obliged to reschedule that class at the convenience of all the students. Classes may not be rescheduled during Reading Days.

Incoming 9th grade students for the 2022-23 school year who are currently living in the Northwest attendance area will automatically be enrolled at Northwest High School. Those who wish to attend a different high school must submit the High School Choice Form prior to January 31, 2022 (click for link).

High School Information Nights!

Students and families are invited to attend one of our three in-person information nights to learn more about Northwest High School and the Bryan College of Health Sciences Focus Program. Events are held from 6:30-7:30 pm each evening.
