Renewal will allow D and F grades to be excluded from the GPA calculation, but the attempts will remain on the transcript.
The SFSU course repeat policy was developed in response to Executive Order 1037: Grading Symbols, Minimum Standards Governing the Assignment of Grades, Policies on the Repetition of Courses, Policies on Academic Renewal, and Grade Appeals. At the time the Academic Senate declined to authorize grade forgiveness, in which a new grade replaces the former grade in terms of calculation of the GPA. This policy addresses this omission. In addition, the original policy, developed before the implementation of Campus Solutions (CS), counted AU and W grades in the repeat count. As CS is not capable of counting AU and W grades for the purposes of course repeat counts, The Academic Policies Committee is recommending their removal from the policy.
In this policy, “repeat” means to enroll in a course for which a grade has already been assigned. “Grade” refers to all grading symbols defined in CSU Executive Order 1037 (effective August 1, 2009). These include administrative grading symbols (AU, I, IC, RD, RP, W, and WU), traditional grades (A, B, C, D, and F, and their plus and minus designations), and non-traditional grades (CR and NC).

If a student chooses to repeat a course in which the grade was passing (D- or higher) after reaching the repeat limit, all units attempted and all grade points earned will be used in the calculation of the student's grade point average (GPA), but the units earned will be applied to the calculation of total units earned only once. Exceptions to this method of GPA calculation are available, as described in Academic Senate Policy S87-148, “Academic Renewal Policy”; the provisions of S87-148 are not superseded by this course repeat policy.
Repeating More Than 28 Units. An undergraduate student cannot repeat any course once the student has repeated 28 units at SF State, unless the course is described in the current SF State Bulletin as repeatable for credit.

Once awarded, academic renewal cannot be revoked. Students will typically apply for academic renewal as soon as they are eligible, but students may apply at anytime after they meet the qualifications and do not need to be currently enrolled to apply.

A Pass/Fail grade may be given for a specific course based on the recommendation of the faculty in the discipline, a supporting rationale, and with the approval of the Provost.
Once the student completes the necessary requirements for the class , a Change of Grade form and a copy of the faculty/student contract must be submitted for the student to receive a grade greater than an "E.".
Students who achieve a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.25 with a minimum of 12 credit hours earned in that semester appear on the Dean’s List under the designation full-time student (12 plus credit hours).
Credit by Examination/Portfolio. Credit may be granted to a student who demonstrates by examination and/or portfolio that they are proficient in a subject. The examinations used shall be appropriate standardized commercial examinations or standardized college-prepared examinations.
The purpose of permitting a student to Audit a class is to make available to any student the opportunity to take a class without being required to complete any of the assigned work. An auditing student must register and pay tuition and fees in the same manner as a student taking the class for credit.
The 'W' grade may only be given to students who officially withdraw from class, and properly complete a Class Withdrawal Form. Students who officially withdraw during the first three-quarters (3/4) of a class/term shall receive a 'W' symbol for that semester.
Students who do not attend an onground or online class by the end of the third week of class (for sections running four (4) weeks or more) or by the end of the third day of class (for sections running three (3) weeks or less) are considered a “ no show” and will receive a grade of NS—No Show.
For example, if you are enrolled in 15 credit hours but 3 of those credit hours are from a previously passed and repeated course, financial aid will only count up to 9 credit hours when factoring in your eligibility.
Scenario 1: The student passed the class the first time in Fall 2020. They retake the course in an attempt to get a higher grade but fail. They are not eligible to take the class a third time. Scenario 2: Student takes the course and fails in Fall 2020.

Department of Education has passed a regulation impacting repeated courses. The regulation states that students may only receive federal financial aid for ONE repetition of a previously passed course. These regulations prohibit Howard University from paying for a course that has been passed more than one time.
