How Our Behind-the-Wheel Course Works. Our BTW driving course helps teens safely learn and practice the skills necessary to pass the DPS driving test and obtain a driver's license. Once they've completed the 32 hours of online course instruction and have a learner's permit, teens are ready to start the in-car portion of their driver education.
Students can self-enroll in the course by accessing the unique link for Fivay: Safe Behind the Wheel – Fivay. This MUST be completed by August 27th if you wish to park on campus beginning August 30th. Students must complete and submit the online parking application. See Mrs. Ballentine for further information.
During the BTW course, a qualified adult must accompany the student. The adult must be a parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, or legal guardian (guardians must have proper court documents). Students can also take the BTW course with a certified instructor at a commercial driving school.
Once they've completed the 32 hours of online course instruction and have a learner's permit, teens are ready to start the in-car portion of their driver education.
This course is now online through Canvas and is a requirement for any student wishing to obtain a parking pass for Fivay High School (there will be NO in-person versions of this course offered anymore)
Please complete this application ONLY if you are licensed driver and have completed the Safe Behind the Wheel class or if you have Passed Drivers Education at Fivay HS.
It can be difficult to give room to the vehicle behind you, but if you end up in a rear-end accident because someone is driving too close to you, it is the other driver’s fault. To best protect yourself, though, it’s vital to remain far enough back from the car in front of you so you can stop in time.
As we mentioned, it’s impossible to predict negligence. You should never expect that another driver is operating his or her vehicle with your safety in mind. Just because you’re exercising defensive driving doesn’t mean other drivers will, and it’s easy for them to cause an accident because of negligence.
There are many dangers on the road, and it’s not always possible to avoid negligence. However, there are things that you can do to protect yourself as much as possible. It’s vital for you to recognize what defensive driving techniques you can utilize to stay safe.
