Tim Trott is a creative photographer, traveller, astronomer and software engineer with a passion for self-growth and a desire for personal challenge.
The show's first Stig wore an all-black outfit and was portrayed by Perry McCarthy, who would have two jobs; to drive fast cars around the Top Gear test track and to teach the guests stars how to drive the Suzuki Liana for their laps in the Star in a Reasonably-Priced Car segments.
The Stig's fastest official lap time around the Top Gear test track was 1:13.4 in an Porsche 911 GT2. Faster times have been posted in a Renault R24 Formula 1 car (0:59.0), Pagani Zonda R (1:03.5), Lotus T125 (1:03.8), Aston Martin DBR9 (1:08.6) and a Caparo T1 (1:10.6), but none of these were deemed street-practical due to inability to navigate regulation UK speed bumps, or because they cannot be purchased by the public.

The Stig. The Stig is an anonymous race car driver created by Jeremy Clarkson and Andy Wilman, who has featured in the British television series Top Gear since its relaunch in 2002. Currently, The Stig is in its third iteration, "born" in a similar location and means to Jesus Christ at the end of the Middle East Special where thereafter it quickly ...
All that can be seen from the gap between The Stig 's helmet and jumpsuit is that he is a white male with dark hair. It is also known that he wears Size 9 racing boots as discovered by the Sunday Times and a well-timed camera flash managed to show The Stig's eyes by Auto Trader.
An audio gag from the first episode of the show is that The Stig has no personal preference when it comes to music, which he listens to during Power Laps around the Top Gear track. Often a specific genre will be chosen for one or more series. These have included power ballads, one-hit wonders, easy listening, country and western, prog rock, baroque, advertising jingles, foreign language tapes, romantic novels, salesman techniques, self-help tapes, Morse code, bagpipes, vuvuzelas (with Jeremy commenting "He must be the only man in the country who likes them"), and the BBC Radio 4 drama series The Archers .
The hosts of the show will often introduce footage of The Stig by offering humorous speculations as to his identity, beginning with the words "Some say...", with these introductions often including references to topical news stories. Previously, Stig's name would be used in more formal introductions, such as "His Holiness, The Stig!".

When Jeremy Clarkson said that the Stig believed that the Suzuki Liana, the show's Reasonably Priced Car at the time, could do a lap time of 1:44.0, former F1 driver Nigel Mansell, appearing as a guest on the programme, duly obliged by posting a time of 1:44.6; the Stig then posted a time of 1:44.4. After Rubens Barrichello became the first person to beat the Stig's time (coming in at 1:44.3), the show repeatedly referred to a jealous rivalry between the Stig and Barrichello. Sebastian Vettel then further beat this time by posting a time of 1:44.0. Clarkson has often mentioned that F1 drivers seem to take a different racing line on the test track than the Stig, such as on Jenson Button 's drive; however, during Barrichello's and Lewis Hamilton 's visits to the show, Clarkson observed that they took the same line around the track as The Stig. F1 driver Mark Webber 's appearance on the show was marked at the conclusion of his lap with Clarkson presenting him with an "I AM THE STIG" T-shirt.
On 19 August 2010, it was reported that a legal dispute was developing between the BBC and publishers representing the Stig, over plans by the Stig to release an autobiography revealing his identity. A BBC spokesman said, "The BBC is in a legal dispute over the publication of a book relating to Top Gear as this breaches agreed contractual and confidentiality obligations relating to the show." The Stig was reportedly unhappy that he had been unable to profit from his Top Gear role to the same degree as the other presenters.

"Rig Stig" made his debut, sporting a "suntanned" right sleeve and glove in reference to his supposed job as a lorry driver. He appeared powersliding a Team Oliver racing truck to show to the presenters that a lorry could drift.
Initially the presenters heralded his appearance with simple humorous introductions, such as " His Holiness, the Stig!" Beginning in series 6, the introductions began to follow a format of, "Some say that [two bizarre characteristics]. All we know is, he's called the Stig." Characteristics described in this format include:
In the Stig's debut, he was described by Clarkson as having a very small brain, worthless opinions, and a disorder called " Mansell Syndrome". Richard Porter, Top Gear's script editor, described the Stig as "single minded, stubborn and hilariously petulant; specifically, a mix of Kimi Räikkönen, the keyboard player from Pet Shop Boys, and a 15-year-old boy forced to go on holiday with his parents." He has been depicted as a piece of cargo, being collected by Clarkson from the baggage conveyor at the airport; he has also been shown stored in a cupboard when not in use.
Well, at the end of the 2002 series, a Sunday newspaper revealed the Stig's identity as racing driver Perry McCarthy, who, when questioned about this said that whilst he knew the identity of the Stig, he 'couldn't comment'.

What is the Stig? Top Gear was was reformatted in 2002, and the Stig was first introduced in a full black racing suit and helmet as a recurring member of the Top Gear team. His main function on the program was to set lap times in various vehicles, such as manual, automatic and hybrid, and test their speed and ability.
Originally created by the show's British counterpart's founder, Jeremy Clarkson, The Stig is a play on the nature of unnamed masked race car drivers who became synonymous with the sport of racing as a whole. And the fact that those playing The Stig hardly ever reveal their appearance is quite literally the series' longest-running joke.
Despite there having only ever been three official Stigs, there have been a handful of celebrities who have come in and filled the role of The Stig for an episode of the British version of the show.
Top Gear define a qualifying vehicle as a road-legal production car on road-legal tires that has sufficient ride height to clear a standard speed bump. For these reasons the F1 car (0:59.0), Aston Martin DBR9 (1:08.6) and Sea Harrier (0:31.2) do not appear.
Independently reported lap times, not in connection with Top Gear series:
Sometimes an additional term is written next to the time (such as Hot). This indicates that The Stig and the Top Gear team consider that the prevalent weather conditions have affected the lap time or car's performance. The time on the board is not changed: e.g. 1:50 MM (Mildly Moist) is deemed to be equivalent to 1:48 on a normal dry track.
