4 Hour Work Zone Traffic Safety: Flagger Course Course Description This course highlights the importance of safety, protection of the public and workers onsite. Students will review revisions to the Building Codes, necessary actions to perform to ensure public safety, accident prevention, and importance of maintaining logbooks.
Flagging can be a very fast-paced job, as roadwork is often done on a tight schedule. You can expect to work all types of shifts, including overnight and the hours can be long. Flaggers don't work alone but rather in teams, communicating with each other on hand-held radios.
Here are five traits that make a good Flagger: Flaggers can receive and communicate specific instructions clearly, firmly, and courteously. They can move and maneuver quickly to avoid danger. Flaggers can effectively control signaling devices and work zone equipment.
(d) Flaggers shall wear warning garments such as vests, jackets, or shirts manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA) 107-2004, High Visibility Safety Apparel and Headwear.
As a flagger, you need to be visible to drivers from a distance. What you wear should distinguish you from the lights of machinery and cars. OSHA recommends you remain visible at a minimum distance of 1,000 feet. During the day, flaggers should wear bright yellow, orange, or green clothing.
