The Virginia D.A.R.E. Training Center was established as a cooperative effort. This center was established to provide the standardized training for D.A.R.E. officers in Virginia and to ensure the integrity of the D.A.R.E. program. The training center also provides assistance to D.A.R.E. America by providing staff for training hosted by D.A.R.E. America. The role of the Virginia D.A.R.E. Training Center is to provide: 1 An initial 80-hour D.A.R.E. training course for law enforcement officers who will teach the K-12 D.A.R.E. curricula. 2 D.A.R.E. Mentor training includes an additional 40 hours of D.A.R.E. instruction and 80 hours of apprenticeship for law enforcement officers who will work with and train other officers as instructors. The Vaping enhancement lesson is a 45 minute lesson designed for deliver by D.A.R.E. Officers. This lesson has two versions that present the information at two developmentally appropriate levels of complexity: one is designed for Middle School students in 7th or 8th grade, and one for High School students in 9th or 10th grade. In these lessons, students will learn about the risks associated with vaping and understand how knowledge of risk factors increases over the lifespan of a product.

Three (3) Required Steps for the Initial Certification as a Virginia Law Enforcement Officer
If your agency has hired a former law enforcement officer who was previously certified in Virginia and out of such employment less than 24 months, the former law enforcement officer can be reinstated without completing a basic academy, but must be current on in-service training within 120 days of hire.
The initial law enforcement officer certification is not valid until all three steps have been completed and the documentation of the required 100 hours minimum of law enforcement field training has been sent to DCJS, and entered into the training records management system.
