Discussion Board Forums include roles for each user involved in the Forum; the default role is Participant. These roles define privileges within the Forum. The Forum roles with administrative privileges that can be assigned to users in a Forum are
Discussion Board statistics are a part of the Performance Dashboard, accessed via the Control Panel. The dashboard displays the total number of Forums in which the user has participated.
The grade feature creates a list of all users and their number of Posts. Clicking Grade next to a student’s name will produce a page of his/her Collected Posts and a place to enter a grade.
A feature often seen in cyberspace, moderation refers to the screening of Posts before they are viewable by the rest of the users. Forums on the World Wide Web are often moderated to prevent cranky users from Posting inappropriate messages (e.g., with foul language, etc.)
In a classroom setting, students are often expected to participate in class discussions where that participation is part of the equation when assessing performance. For online courses, student interactions in the Discussion Board most typically provide a specific record of participation. Instructors can assign students a grade for either the quality or quantity of their discussion Posts, or for both.
Alternately, you can grade discussion Posts via the Gradebook itself. The disadvantage here is that the actual Posts don't appear on the page where you enter the grades. The advantage is that you can assign grades to all students at once and readily see information about the nature of the scoring, such as whether the grade is viewable by users or included in score calculations.
Announcements in Blackboard are communications from you to all of your students - use them to notify students of upcoming assignments, tests, or any other course information they need to know. The Announcements page will look something like this:
The Subject will be the title of your announcement; type your text in the Message box. With the Blackboard content editing tools you can add videos, audio, attach files, etc.
To add Respondus monitoring to a test, navigate to the Course Management > Course Tools menu on the left-hand navigation options as you would to create a test. From the Course Tools menu, select Respondus Lockdown Browser. Blackboard will show you a landing page with some welcome information and tutorials. Click the orange Continue to Lockdown Browser button to continue, and you'll see a list of the Tests in your course with drop-down arrows next to each one.
The Course Link feature lets you link from an announcement directly to a content area, assignment, deployed test, or many other areas in your Blackboard course. This is a useful feature but can be tough to navigate.
The drop-down menu next to content in a content area serves several key functions, including editing an existing content item, making content available or unavailable to students, or delete unnecessary content.
To set up a test in Blackboard, you first create it from scratch and then deploy it to a content area. To get started creating a test, navigate to the Course Management area of the left-hand navigation menu. Click the arrow to expand the Course Tools options and select "Tests, Surveys, and Pools." At the next menu, select "Tests" and then click "Build Test."
A Discussion Board is a tool for sharing thoughts and ideas between students and instructors in a course on an asynchronous basis. Asynchronous means that participants do not need to be online or in the same location at the same time. They also allow students time to thoughtfully consider their own responses carefully before sharing. A well designed discussion board will duplicate the discussions that would have taken place in a traditional classroom. Additionally, discussion boards allow you to:
Under the institutional hierarchy for NU, CityU, JFK, and NUVHS, they also use another customization tool called the Quick Enroll Module. They can path an administrative role to a course level role specific to each affiliate. For instance, CityU has an administrative role that is used by three staff members in charge of faculty support. They provide best practices for the use of online tools or troubleshooting of technical issues. David’s team created that role within CityU’s hierarchy, very much like a partition, so that only those staff members have access to their affiliate’s courses but with specific privileges, such as turning tools on and off or managing Tabs and Modules. The experience is seamless for the end user, and administrators can be sure that their activity won’t affect entities outside of their affiliate’s hierarchy.
