Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted the 1936 PGA Championship, the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Opens and both the men's and women's 2014 U.S. Opens. It will also serve as the site of the 2024 U.S. Open. Greens fees range from $50-$495, depending on the time of year and which of the club's courses you play.
The greens have many undulations making putting very challenging. The course was in good condition but here is my issue. When you come to Pinehurst, and pay $280 for a round on number 4, you expect excellent and pleasant service.

18. Mid Pines Inn & Golf Club. The Mid Pines course remains exactly as Donald Ross numbered and routed the course in 1921. Impeccably manicured to modern standards, Mid Pines is a classic gem, a rarity among Ross’s masterpieces because it is exactly as he crafted it more than 88 years ago.
Of the more than 400 courses Donald Ross designed, Pinehurst No. 2 was where he made his home, continuing to tweak and perfect the course throughout his life. After an extensive restoration by Bill Coore & Ben Crenshaw, the course has returned to the way Ross originally intended.

No. 8 is just an excellent golf experience. The trek is much more of a parkland layout than no. 2, but still has severe roll offs, penalizing bunkers, and quick greens. This is just another excellent course at an excellent destination. No. 8 is a good course to play before No. 2. Show All.
This is another golf course that I'd like to give 4 1/2 stars if that option were available, because Tom Fazio's No. 8 design is certainly that good. It's a modern golf course, no doubt, but it fits the sand hills terrain perfectly, albeit with a few more water hazards than 1-5 at Pinehurst. There's nothing boring about No. 8 and it'll challenge the best players from the rearward tees. Like all the courses here, you can almost always expect great conditioning, including the greens surfaces.
No. 8 is a good course to play before No. 2.
The layout is also a fun challenge. There are well placed bunkers to keep you honest, and a nice variety of looks. I particularly enjoyed the par 5s on this course. The par 3s were a bit same-y and shorter, but was nice they weren't all 200+ yds either.
The Country Club of Asheville is one of North Carolina’s oldest golf clubs (inaugurated in 1894) and it has a rather intriguing story that involved a course swap in the 1970s. Linville (1892) is however considered the Tar Heel state’s oldest golf club. For most, Pinehurst (1895) is the synonym for golf in North Carolina.
Wade Hampton Golf Club was named after the Confederate cavalry leader, General Wade Hampton III, who was also Governor of South Carolina and later US Senator during the 19th century.
In fact, there are more than fifty Donald Ross courses in North Carolina, which means around 10% of the state's 600 golf courses (Scotland has a similar number of courses) were touched by the prolific Scotsman.

Host to the US Women’s Amateur Championship in 2010, the course at Charlotte Country Club is a lovely old Donald Ross design that was recently renovated by Ron Pritchard.
For most, Pinehurst (1895) is the synonym for golf in North Carolina. Pinehurst was home to Donald Ross for nearly fifty years and the Resort occupies a vast 2,000-acre tract of Carolinian sandhills. You’ll need to schedule a little more time than usual to play the entire set of Pinehurst’s courses, but save enough time to play Ross’s Pine Needles ...
