Some undergraduate programs require a C or better in specific courses to be able to take the follow-on courses. Thus, a grade of S will allow students to move forward.
Because transcripts are needed for employment , graduate schools, professional schools, and a variety of other situations, MSU must balance the need to finalize transcripts with the flexibility for students to make decisions about the S/P/U grading choices.
Instructors will enter their grades using the normal grading system (A-F). These grades will be stored in the system permanently. There will be an appeal process to request any changes between these grade modes following the May 7 deadline.

Meanwhile at Harvard, students were graded based on a numerical system from 1-200 (except for math and philosophy where 1-100 was used). Later, shortly after 1883, Harvard used a system of "Classes" where students were either Class I, II, III, IV, or V, with V representing a failing grade.
In 1887, Mount Holyoke College became the first college to use letter grades similar to those commonly used today. The college used a grading scale with the letters A, B, C, D, and E, where E represented a failing grade.
Letter grades provide an easy means to generalize a student's performance. They can be more effective than qualitative evaluations in situations where "right" or "wrong" answers can be easily quantified, such as an algebra exam, but alone may not provide a student with enough feedback in regards to an assessment like a written paper (which is much more subjective).
Although a written analysis of each individual student's work may be a more effective form of feedback, there exists the argument that students and parents are unlikely to read the feedback, and that teachers do not have the time to write such an analysis. There is precedence for this type of evaluation system however, in Saint Ann's School in New York City, an arts-oriented private school that does not have a letter grading system. Instead, teachers write anecdotal reports for each student. This method of evaluation focuses on promoting learning and improvement, rather than the pursuit of a certain letter grade in a course. For better or for worse however, these types of programs constitute a minority in the United States, and though the experience may be better for the student, most institutions still use a fairly standard letter grading system that students will have to adjust to. The time investment that this type of evaluation method requires of teachers/professors is likely not viable on university campuses with hundreds of students per course. As such, although there are other high schools such as Sanborn High School that approach grading in a more qualitative way, it remains to be seen whether such grading methods can be scalable. Until then, more generalized forms of grading like the letter grading system are unlikely to be entirely replaced. However, many educators already try to create an environment that limits the role that grades play in motivating students. One could argue that a combination of these two systems would likely be the most realistic, and effective way to provide a more standardized evaluation of students, while promoting learning.

Being a college student comes with a lot of hard work. No matter what your future plans are, it’s important to do your best in your college classes. This is especially true of those courses that relate directly to your major. Many people wonder, “What is a passing grade in college?” Coming from high school, the grading system doesn’t really change. In fact, a “D” is considered passing in both high school and college, as it’s above 60%. While a passing grade may be as low as 60%, you will want to aim higher for many reasons.
While this depends on your career choice, a GPA of 3.15 or above is generally well-respected. This GPA represents a B average.
In college, like in any year of school, grades are representative of how well you perform and absorb the information in a class. Some professors may grade on a curve, thereby changing a normal grading scale to fit it to how the majority of students are performing.
However, your grades are one of the primary considerations because they show how well you understand the material. Grades are also reflective of your effort and dedication to a course.
This could be because you have too many difficult classes to juggle, or perhaps there are circumstances outside of school that are causing you to lose focus. Regardless of what’s causing the situation, there may be other alternatives to consider before failing a class.
If you pass the deadline and then drop the class, it will result in a withdrawal, or a W on your transcript. While a W is not counted towards your grade, it isn’t optimal to have on your transcript. Furthermore, too many Ws could end up resulting in dismissal from the institution.
Some place more weight on exams, whereas others may care more about course assignments. At the beginning of the year, professors will share this information with you in a syllabus. Hang on to every syllabus in an organized place so you can always refer back to the grading system.
Master's End of Program Requirements: For all capstone courses that begin after January 1, 2017, master's students must earn a B- (80%) or better on their capstone thesis/project/paper and a B- (80%) or better in their capstone course to pass the course. This policy aligns with the comprehensive exam, which also requires a B- (80%) or better to pass. Master's students must have at least a 3.0 GPA in order to graduate. APUS Grading System (Chart) Your cumulative GPA at APUS is determined solely by the courses you have taken at APUS towards your current degree. If you change your major, your previous APUS courses will roll over into your GPA for your new major.
However, if you graduate from a program, you would start over with a fresh GPA when you start on your next program. For example, your grades towards your conferred Associate degree at APUS do not impact your subsequent GPA in your Bachelor program.
Course No Longer Counted in APUS GPA as it was Retaken. However, the previous grade would still be counted by a third parties, such as the federal government for Financial Aid eligibility and by the military for calculating a GPA for TA eligibility.
To receive a "P" for Pass and to get credit/units, you must earn a grade of "C" or better. However, if a course is taken for a letter grade, the minimum grade needed for credit would be at least a "D-" in most courses. This is especially important to note for graduating students, who are trying to fulfill their last requirements to graduate. You will need to weigh the risk of taking a course P/NP and not receiving credit if you earn the equivalent of a "C-" or lower.
It is recommended that you see how you are doing in the courses throughout the quarter. You have until 5PM on Friday of Week 10 to submit a request to change the grade option of a non-major course. (No grade option changes can be made after that time - no further exceptions are permitted)
All writing courses (GE Category I: Writing) must be completed with a grade of "C" or better ("P" for pass, if taking the course for P/NP). If you are taking an upper-division writing course in your major, you must take the course for a letter grade. If you are retaking a course that was originally for a LETTER GRADE, ...
You are repeating a course previously taken for a Letter Grade. (You may not choose P/NP for retake) The course (s) is a MAJOR requirement or MATH course. School of Social Sciences' Major courses and the Math Requirement, must be completed for a LETTER GRADE only.
Additional Considerations. "Pass" and "No Pass" grades do not impact your GPA. A "C" grade or higher is needed to "Pass" and receive credit. If a course is taken for a Letter Grade, you only need a "D-" to receive credit (with the exception of Writing courses, which require at least a "C" to fulfill the requirement).
IF you are waitlisted for a course and have not been attending or do not wish to be added, it is YOUR responsibility to drop the waitlisted course. Please check your Study List and waitlist to make sure you are not added at the last minute, so be proactive and drop the course ahead of time.
