A classic Donald Ross course, Plainfield is best known as the host of the 2011 and 2015 Barclays Tournament, the first event in the PGA Tour's playoffs. This is a wonderful layout that takes advantage of its rolling property (the clubhouse is perched atop the highest point in Middlesex County), but most important is the work that's been done in recent years. More than 1,200 trees were removed as part as part of a restoration, bringing back angles as Ross initially designed, and many bunkers were restored to their original grass-faced faces. A great, great track.
Exposed rock is a theme throughout the property, from the outcroppings that separate the split fairways on No. 7 to the ridge behind the 18th green. Overlooking the closing hole (from the highest point on the property) is a massive clubhouse that looks like it could be equally at home on a ski slope in Montana.
