A range of theories of language acquisition will be presented and the impact of nature and nurture on children's development will be discussed. The typical sequence of language acquisition in the areas of phonology, semantics, syntax and pragmatics will be presented. The relations between oral language development and the acquisition of literacy will be emphasized.
