In case you were wondering: There is no “Storm Chaser” job description at NSSL. The only time people chase storms for NSSL is when a special project is being run to collect data in the field. These projects are somewhat rare.
Many storm chasers will support themselves with a second job, or will only work as a storm chaser seasonally. Other storm chasers are actually meteorologists who chase storms as a part of a research project, or as a part of a larger job description.
Attend a storm spotter training class. Classes are free, last about 2 hours, and are open to the public. In the WFO Chicago area, spotter training classes are conducted from early February through early April. Scheduling of spotter training classes begins around the New Year.
