Lake Hopatcong was a booming tourist location in the 1880’s, when visitors would arrive by train. Passengers who arrived to enjoy the warm sun and cool lake would be taken to their destination by steamboat for only 25 cents! The Lake Hopatcong Dam, built in 1827 , is the most important structure on the lake. Today the dam continues to flow into the Musconetcong River eco-system. The dam held a very important role in the economic and natural history of the lake – including creating the Lake Hopatcong as we know it today.

Ogden Mine Railroad. This 10-mile stretch of railroad played a pivotal role in two bygone industries. First, the tracks were built to transport iron ore to Newark. Later, harvested ice from the lake was transported on the tracks to massive store houses.
