The purpose of the Ironman triathlon is to test the physical endurance and mental stamina of its athletic participants due to its grueling length (11 to 17 hours of constant exercise) and arduous race conditions (winds, waves, heat, and sometimes very inclement weather).
17 hoursMost Ironman races allow you 17 hours to complete all three parts of the race. Usually, the race begins at 7 a.m. You are expected to finish the swim in 2 hours and 20 minutes; the bike ride done by 5:30 p.m.; and the marathon completed by midnight.
As a general rule of thumb, endurance athletes should aim to eat 60-90 grams of carbohydrate per hour during IRONMAN events, with athletes typically able to consume more calories and fluids during the bike leg and fewer calories during the run portion of the event.
Anyone can do an IRONMAN if they want to. If you are considering it, then there is no doubt that you can do it too… with a bit of self-belief and hard work, you can achieve anything. However, you need to give yourself the best chances of success.
Mirror Lake, a calm, pristine lake right in the heart of Lake Placid serves as the best Ironman swim in the world. The swim will take place in beautiful Keystone Lake located at Keystone State Park in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. This race will begin with a rolling start format. Water temperatures this time of year are generally in the low to mid 70’s.

Any athlete that takes longer than 8 hours and 30 minutes to complete the race will receive a DNF and will not be eligible for age group awards and will not be eligible for IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship slots. What are the course cut-off times? Swim: Each wave will have 1:10 to complete the swim. Athletes who take longer than 1:10 to complete the swim will receive a DNF. Additionally, any athlete that starts in the final wave and misses the 1:10 cut off will not be allowed to continue on in the race and will receive a DNF.
Run: 8 hours and 30 minutes after the final wave start. Total Time Cut-off: The race will officially end 8 hours and 30 minutes after the final wave. Each athlete will have8 hours and 30 minutes to complete the race.

A non-participant escort runner includes supporters, coaches, athletes who have withdrawn from the race, athletes who have been disqualified or athletes who have finished the race. It IS permissible for an athlete who is still competing to run with other athletes who are still competing.
Once an athlete competes in the Professional/Elite category in the IRONMAN qualifying race series season, the athlete cannot compete in that year’s IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship as an age grouper.
